Laser Hand/Melee weapon
So, basically a laser weapon that has the duration of the ER large laser, but only has an optimal range out to 5m, However does 150 damage.
It would have to be of a tonnage that prevents light mechs from using it and it would have to have a heat rating and cooldown that prevents people from overusing it. Otherwise it makes the DFA people happy, because they can make that their only weapon and jump down to jab mechs without it creating programming problems. It can make for some interesting gameplay for the faster medium mechs that will use it.
It should not break the game, because people can't just rush ahead with it as they'll just end up getting cut down before they ever reach their target. Somebody can't just rush a whole team and kill everyone, because the cooldown and the tonnage will make them defenseless until the weapon is available again.
I think it would make for some interesting gameplay. We already have something like this with rockets, but those are single use and can be used from further away. This would be a very fun situational weapon for specific builds using very specific tactics. I think it would work with the current mwo infrastructure and would like to see it in the game.

You said that such weapon "would have to be of a tonnage that prevents light mechs from using it".
Do you really think that MWO needs a weapon doing 150 damage and weighing 17 tons with range 5 meters?

yes.
And really there wouldn't be facehugging, because this would be medium mech's single weapon and they would need to upgrade to and XL engine to be fast enough to use it, which means that they would be even more vulnerable to being caught trying to charge. It would not make sense to use it on a heavy or an assault mech due to speed and the leftover tonnage being unable to fit any decent weapons. The cooldown would be enough to prevent it being used more than once within like 30 seconds or a minute, whatever balances. You could even change the damage to like 100 or 75 so that it would require information gathering to know what mech no longer has fresh armor, so there would be more strategy involved than timing the charge through a fresh mech. I don't think it could hurt.
