I think its time to introduce a new weapon, since we already got 3 years of only missiles and ballistics. What i think we need is lobbing weapons in an arc such as the Mech Mortars.

Its really useful in my opinion when you cant hit something behind a hill, but you know the enemy is behind it. You can compare it to de traditional hand grenades we use in current modern warfare.

Sure Long Tom could be nice for a change. Just worried about balance and the convenience of having such a weapon in the game.

Na neither LongTom Artillery Piece nor LongTom Cannon

Mortars work different. While indirect fire was optional for LRMs, - indirect fire is the only way to go for Mortars.
They don't fire one huge shell but 1;2;4;8 smaller grenades in one volley.

The difficulty would be to deliver shots - because you don't see the target nor do you have any guidance (maybe the only mode where 3rdPV would be of help)
So spread may become important, or using ripple fire to give the player some control over the burst

Thats why i choose Mech Mortars. I know the Long Tom canon is an iconic weapon but the damage is just insane. Also there are allot of restrictions on this weapon how to use it. According to Sarna it only can be mounted on a Side Torso and its a huge canon so probably won't fit in general ballistic slots .

Mech Mortars are rather easy to mount and doesn't require much critical slots, it can be just the same launcher as a Missile hardpoint. Also comes in different sizes which makes it scalable in different Mech Classes. The benefit of using mortars instead of missiles are:

- Not requiring lock-on or LOS
- Not having a hard counter like ECM or AMS.
- Lobbing over hills

Downsides compared to missiles are:
- No guidance to target
- Less accurate / less pinpoint damage (which is good to change the current META where pinpoint damage is king)
- Less effective on long ranges due longer traveling time and larger spread (Compared to LRM's).

Also a important note: Clan and Inner Sphere are capable to use this weapon.

Have to agree here. Different type of weapon system compared to the current one's here. Need a new/different tar
get system with mortars.

True, it does require some UI visualization, but there are enough examples of Mech Warrior Living Legends how to implement this. Also, I don't think there need that much of adjustments. Ever thrown a hand grenade in Battlefield 3? There is no UI range indicator in that game, only a on-hit feedback. Just aiming upwards is enough to throw a grenade.

What I want to say with this, it doesn't have to be complicated. Just let the player figure it out how the weapon system works, we got Mech Academy right? The only requirement for this is that a weapon-system has to be consistent in how it has to be used.

Rotary ACs, Light & Heavy Gauss, Rocket Launchers, Arrow IV, Thunder/Swarm LRMs... I'd rather see these first.
