Well, so you want to play in a big stompy robot or mech and blow **** up. Great because you came to the right place to learn the basics of getting started and some of the things they do not tell you in the tutorials.

First getting the game:
There are now two options, one is to download the game from here (http://mwomercs.com/game/download) home of mechwarrior online's website. OR you can download the game from steam store (type in mechwarrior online into the search in steam store should be first selection choice).

*Remember to check and make sure your machine can handle the game.

Second setting up an account:
You can either create an account from game which will direct you to the website to create an account. OR you could just stay here and create your account before even downloading.

Third go through the tutorial in game:
Yes go through it, master it, earn those important CBills by doing it. You will learn basic movement, aiming, shooting, and heat management.

Fourth get your Cadet Bonus:
After the tutorial is completed, get in a trial mech and play 25 matches. You will get a cadet bonus for your first 25 matches. Save the CBills you earn from this as well. What your goal is to find what weight class you would like to pilot first by testing the trial mechs. So it is important you test them all out, try the lights, the mediums, the heavies, and assaults. Do not just try one of each weight class try each mech because each chassis has its own thing going for it.

Fifth all those CBills:
Now you should have your Tutorial Academy CBills + Cadet Bonus CBills = A **** Ton of CBills. You should have tested all the trial mechs as well. Now is the first time you will BUY your first mech depending on your preference from your experience during your use of the trial mechs. Now I have some extra info from some types of mechs that you might be considering.

Inner Sphere (IS): You will most likely have to add 1.5 million CBills to the cost of any mech you purchase so you can have better heat management. STD or standard heat sinks are useless and must be gotten replaced ASAP.

Clan: Expensive, more so than IS because they already come with items and upgrades like double heat sinks.

Both: Any build will require 10 heat sinks, your build is limited to the tonnage, and some weapons are ammo dependent so build accordingly!!!

Sixth mastering your mechs:
OK now you have your first mech. So drop with it and earn more CBills to buy TWO (2) more variants of that mech chassis. This is because you have to basic 3 different variants to reach the elite level of the mech skill. Every skill helps in minor or major ways and they have to be basic'd elite'd and then master'd for you to unlock that important extra module slot.

Seventh prepping for Community Warfare:
Well hopefully now you own a few different mech chassis and they will be mastered. You will then want to try Community Warfare/Faction Play. Disclaimer it is for people who consider their ability good enough to with stand against competitive players. If you do not think you can handle getting your butt kicked a few times then you might want to grind some more until you think you are ready. So first is having 4 mechs in a drop deck (for IS it has a 250 tonnage limit for clanners you have a 240 tonnage limit, subject to change by developers), put together mechs that you are good in, mastered preferred, and fits the drop limit of the faction you choose. Next is very important, hop into the Teamspeak of that faction. List hopefully coming to be sticky'd in Community Warfare section of the forums. It is important you get your feet wet with playing with people who can help guide you through a match of other competitive players. It helps lessen the hurt if you get stomped, but hey if you good enough feel free to go it solo (I do every now and then).

Other Random Things:
* Never Sell and Engine
* Modules are important and expensive, never sell a module.
* Purchasing an IS light mech means spending double or triple (some times more) the cost of CBills listed in the store because of all the upgrades to make the mech viable. (Rogue Jedi)

If I missed something add it in your post.

Good Luck Mechwarriors!!!

just wanted to add, if you are looking at an Inner Sphere light Mech and see it only costs 2-5 million do not buy it because it looks cheep, the price is deceptave
you will usualy have to spend double the initial cost on upgrades to get the Mech to a vaguely competitive state, most Mechs will want a big XL engine, costing between 3 and 5 million, as well as Double Heat Sinks (1.5 million) and the weight saving, in exchange for internal space upgrades Endo Steel Internals and probably also Fero Fibrus Armor (combined depends on weight but can cost cost up-to 525,000 for a 35 ton Light) to allow them to fit enough weapons and equipment
