When coming back into the game after alt tabbing out, pressing shift for the first time will open the steam overlay. This happens on both whether you click back in, or tab back in using alt-tab. Pressing tab and release before pressing shift after returning stops this issue from happening. It seems that the game is not capturing the "Tab Released" called and considering the button held for the purposes of steam overlay.

Using full window mode

re-map your Steam overlay to Shift-F1 Posted Image happened to me a lot... and this prior to it being released on Steam because I run all my games through Steam instead of having lots of clutter on my desktop.

This isn't a key map issue, but a bug where MWO is registering key pressing when it should not.

Are you sure ?

Worked for me.. I mapped mine to Shift+F10....
So far no more Overlay pop ups while typing text ingame... Seems to be due to some delay key input recognition..

Yes, because you don't have "Tab" marked as part of you overlay key.

The issue is that MWO is not firing the "OnKeyReleased" function, so the game still thinks the Tab key is pressed.
Yes, I could map this to a different key, but that doesn't fix the issue - it's a workaround.
I prefer the Shift+Tab shortcut, and have been using it for years. I'm not about to change it just because PGI messed up
