memtest showed my RAM is good...has to be my PSU

more detail about my problem..

I was playing Warhammer 40k Space Marine, when the psychic scourge fires it shoots out a very bright light in a graphics intense scene. The moment the light got to the brightest the screen went black, my monitor said it lost signal and i to get the comp back i had to press the manual restart button, but the lights in my case never went out and the fans kept going.

Also this same thing happened when playing MWLL and i got hit by a LRM barrage.

It seems to only happen when the GPU is maxing or ramping up other then that it runs fine.

Second Edit: all my core temps are far from the max for my CPU, under load i was peaking at 50 degrees Celsius. my GPU peaks at 80 degrees Celsius and i don't know how to check the socket or bridge temps

Yeah, smells of PSU....You could try to run some gpu && gpu stress tests, just to be 110% sure, but I would rather go and get a new one B)

IDK, everytime I've experienced what the OP says is happening, it was a GPU driver issue or the GPU is over-heating(which isn't happening with the GPU temp being 80'c). Before spending any of your money, I suggest trying different drivers for your video card, just to make sure.

I see 2 options for you:
  • Try another power supply with the same video settings (if it works it was the PS)
  • Turn down your video settings and use the same power supply (if it works it could be the PS - or it could still be the card overheating)
I have seen a card running in the 80's for a good while start to fail at some point (ASUS) it was sent back in replaced. It didn't crash the box, but had video issues.

Before you head off and buy a new PSU or GPU i would recommend resetting the BIOS and air gaping the GPU.

To reset the bios all you have to do is locate and remove the small silver battery from the Motherboard for approx 30secs, generally located just below the first PCI-E x16 slot. Now to get to this you will have to take out the GPU, but if not (say you find the battery else where) remove the GPU for 30secs as well. This will totally reset you PC, and to many peoples surprise simply air-gaping hardware can resolve a lot of problems.

Or the GPU is on its way out, which it shouldn't be.
While the PSU screams out, if it was a case of not enough power the whole machine would shutdown, not just the video display or it would die a painful firey death...

My suggestion would be to try swapping out the PSU/GPU if at all possible before splashing the cash on the wrong aspect.

my Nvidia drivers are the 301.42 set, i'm planning on talking to my buddy who is a uber geek when he can get on steam and getting a final second opinion before i buy anything. I would like to thank everyone for the help.

This problem only recently started so i don't think it is my GPU as it is also very new. The PSU is old so it may be that. I'm not spending money until my buddy can tell me exactly what it might be.

New/Old when it comes to computers and components can in cases be irrelevant.

Agreed, I have old hardware still running and new items that have dropped in no time. I'm more inclined to say I've seen new hardware fail early on.

Went to a local PC repair place today, the guy there said he was sure it was a PSU failing. With that in mind and with what everyone else told me, i am planning on buying a new PSU.

Here is the one that looks like the best deal for me, tell me what you all think please.

Single Rail 65 AMPS, will give you what you need, I haven't bought any of the "Gaming Series" of Corsair PSUs, so I can't offer any advice on those.
BUT I know these are a real GEM.. http://www.newegg.co...N82E16817139011
.
I know you're on a budget, I just wanted to throw that out...
On a side note, just stay away form Cougar PSUs, they are made by Compucase Enterprise... Not good..

Umm.. no. First off, it's not a very energy efficient PSU, and it is high enough over how much wattage that your efficiency will go down further. Also, it's not using high end internals. This would be a far better PSU for your purposes for less; http://www.newegg.co...N82E16817182263

Dude i want to thank you personally for finding that for me, i'm a bit of a noob when it comes to finding good parts, as you can tell. the price is right and the thing is modular which is a BIG plus for me. I'm sure it has enough wattage to power my rig so i will be most likely buying this.

To be on the safe side, use the PSU calculator.

http://extreme.outer...culatorlite.jsp

Your PSU should never supply enough power for your rig. it should always supply more, in the event you need to add more devices.
