I came back to play MWO again after a long hiatus. Was placed in Tier 4 and was very happy with my 300k - 400k cbill payouts 3-6 kills per match before I moved into Tier 3 and needed to wait for 5 mins before I could actually brawl in my brawling Timberwolf build.
I saved enough cbills (12 million) and decided to drop it on the Grasshopper 5P. I know it's not a meta mech, I know it ain't that good, I know the model is too big and to some people it's even DOA.
But good god, the hill to climb is massive, how does anyone feel about starting over in a new mech all over again? Without elited mechs and all that stuff you're basically useless in those mechs. You can't reverse in time, you can't peek and reverse fast enough, you're an absolutely immobile crap.
I tried PPC, Med Lasers, LPL MPL, LPL MLasers, ER LL... quite a few combinations.
Did an average of 200-400 damage with that mech and I swapped back out to my other mechs. Even my Centurion 9AH (AC20, 3x SRM4) did waaaaay more damage consistently than the Grasshopper.
Sure there will be some excitement whenever you start out a new mech but are you sure new players will stand match after match of being absolutely crushed after their honey moon period?

Starting Over A New Mech And The Hill Is Massive

PGI had nerfed the skill tree, so an elited mech has much less advantage over a basic one. Just play more carefully and stick with the team. Also, always save up 1750 GXP to skill up the heat related skill trees on new mechs before dropping with it.

I start new mechs all the time... don't play them until you have them fully kitted out

Given CW is so utterly awful for a non-group pugger, the grind of 'Mechs Pokemon is the very substance of the game for me.

I'm not feeling it. And the difference is smaller now than ever. And for new players, Tier 4 and Tier 5 is going to be full to the brim with other people levelling mechs anyway. When you get to Tier 1, you'll encounter the dudes with 1,000,000 XP for their Timber Wolves. That's a different story. But even then, when you're Tier 1, you probably know how to put together new mechs.
It's not a big problem, IMO. When I got my last mech, the Black Knight, I was blown away by how easy it was. Even the Shadow Cat, when it was new. Not a problem.

Before the Skill Tree was nerfed, I used to keep track of my damage per match and K/D ratio as I leveled some of my new mechs - and the results were exactly as I expected them.
What I would do is:
play 10-20 matches in a mech with zero skills, assess the performance, then unlock all Basics.
play 10-20 matches in the mech with Basics, assess the performance, then unlock all Elite.
play 10-20 matches in the mech fully Elited, assess the performance.
Almost 50% of the time I had better performance/stats in my pre-Basic matches than I did in my post-Elite matches. Almost 50%! And sometimes the very best match I had in a mech during those 30-60 matches was actually the very first match I played in it funnily enough. What this confirmed for me is that the Skill Tree isn't anywhere near as important as people make it out to be. You can even achieve better results without skills because the Skill Tree doesn't honestly make that much of a difference - it's completely trumped by piloting experience, especially good positioning.
Now that the Skill Tree is a ghost of its former self, this should be even more the case - the lack of skill unlocks really don't hinder you as much as you think they do, it's mostly psychological.

I put 3 UAC5s on my brand new Jager and never looked back :3
I think my PSR is just static right now since I'm always using silly builds and mechs and on impatient days I rush to the front line with me ER LLs... yeah it happens.

Really, the only usefull skills are those related to heat, everything else was nerfed into the ground. Torso twist? Down from 40% to placebo level of 5%. Accel/decel rate down from 40/50% to 15%.

I do it all the time - but then I rarely play the same mech twice in any given session - play a mastered mech then a mastered and back and forth - I enjoy it more that way and get more c-bills

It's likely the combination of you playing the Timberwolf before, which is a rather agile mech (huge engine), and then being used to how it handled with the old skill tree. Then going over to the Grasshopper and also the new skill tree (which makes everything without a huge engine rather sluggish).
Dunno what to say, even if you Master your new Grasshopper, it will still be sluggish since the new skills don't do much for agility anymore.
Also, some mechs simply are harder to use than others. For example, I do horrible in my Victor (which is supposed to be kinda agile), but rather well in my Awesomes (who are not as agile). I also do well in my King Crabs, and they are super-sluggish!
