Adding friends to your Friend's List is really easy in MWO. While in a game, pull up the Scoreboard and right-click any player's name. It brings up a menu in which you can send a request to add them as a friend that they will see when the game is finished (under Alerts). It's that easy. Once they are on your Friend's List they will show up under the Friend's tab on the Social Button (very bottom, icon looks like 3 people). You can start a group (using the Social Button) and right-click their name and send a request to invite them to your group.
Also, if you want to join a group right-a-way for games(s), you can click on the LFG tab under the Social Button.
