I mentioned this in another thread. The windshield or canopy in mechs has oft been referred to as "Transpex", which seems to be a copyright name of some future wonder material.

The Longbow I believe had a sunk in cockpit not external screen it was all from cameras. I don't think electronic warfare would mess with hardlined cameras but a PPC on the other hand..........

Cockpit windows for F-35s and British helicopters too. Science Channel had a pretty decent clip on it on one of its many "how its made" shows. Was pretty slick how they used it. And remember, a Ruby is just a red sapphire so any "ruby" applications fall into the realm of Corundum (crystalline Aluminum Oxide) products. The impurity's just add the colors we all know and love.

Exactly. Corundum has been used for about 40 years now in its pure, lab grown form because until we figured out how to lab-grow sheet diamond it was the hardest, toughest transparent material we knew how to make.

I have to laugh at the ruby comment. You would not believe the number of people that think Ruby and Sapphire are different stones.

Current fighter cockpits are made of transparent aluminum which while very expensive is quite bullet proof. Add a lot of years of technology and probably quite a bit of thickness and you get safe cockpit glass for a mech. You are driving a giant walking tank with a compact fusion reactor for power and you have a problem with damage resistant glass?

I believe it's called Ferroglass.I wish i could give you the details about it,but i don't remember it offhand right now.Suffice to say it's ridiculously strong and not really comparable to glass canopies we have today.

Hmmmm.... it would be nice to see some mechs totally covered in this stuff with its internals on sight, just imagining though.

Also it would be nice to see through you hunchback massive soulder cannon B)
