Can we (Mechwarriors) become a mercenary? Yes there's many companies looking for fresh recruits now, but what if you ain't recruited can you become a mercenary in MWO?

I think that you will have to play as a mercenary. That's why this website is called mwomercs.com

Interestingly enough, I hadn't noticed the the web address had mercs in it. Thanks for point that out. Didn't I read that each Mech Warrior will have to select which of the Great Houses they hailed from? I wonder if that is going to affect which Houses you can work for?

You DO pick a house to work for- but you are in the role of a mercenary working for them. We don't know yet if you can switch later.

We don't know what each house effect is yet (they haven't mentioned). Maybe stronger or cheaper versions of particular weapons, or unique mechs? However, each house will be in control of particular planets, which people will be able to fight over (Again, we don't know the benefit yet).

The idea behind being a mercenary, and I'm certain it will be preserved for this game, is that you are independent of a House, you can work for them all, or for any employer willing to pay money that the Merc Corps is willing to work for.

If I read it correctly, everyone starts out actually BOUND to a House, and then, LATER, Merc Corps will be begun. The devs, a la Garth, are allowing us to lay down our units, now, in the Merc Recruiting forum, but that doesn't mean, if I understand what I read, we will begin as mercs. It would be wise, I feel, to have Command role players strive for improvement of their command skills and abilities, and THEN, when they reach the appropriate benchmarks for becoming a Commander, then they can split off and begin their Merc Corps. If this is not the way it's going to work, and I won't pretend to know, though I'm sure it's going to be VERY cool, then I will form Armageddon Unlimited as quickly as I possibly can and get the folks who've already signed up involved, and we'll go from there.

I'd probably go with an independant contractor in the employ of House Davion, or maybe I'll just join the 12th Vegan Rangers....I like either option based on fiction, though it will probably just plain old depend on how well I can along with my teammates!

I thought I remember reading a very short statement in one of the Q&As about being able to play the "lone wolf" type of player. That would imply that you can play solo (for at least some mission types) without having to be part of a merc corp or house.

Almost certainly you'll either be fighting as part of a house or as a merc corp. "Part of a house" may be as literal as fighting in one of the house units, or it could be simply being an independent contractor that signs on with a house unit for a single battle. It'd make no sense to just go marching onto the field without picking a side first. How on earth would that end any way other than badly? lol.

No reason you couldn't play a 1v1 game!
Other than that, it's possible to take a matched group of individuals into a game rather than an already-established merc corp or house unit.
That's all I was saying.
