So I was with SC from Smoke Jaguar for a short time, YOU GUYS ROCK, however, I wanted to continue my tour of the factions. So I left SC and tried to join my old unit which is still under contract with SJ.

However, it will not let me. I get the following error: "Unable to join the unit. Your current Contracts duration is longer than the Units contract."

SC had permanent contract with SJ and the unit I am trying to join only has a 7 day contract. I checked my status and it shows I have a permanent contract with SJ. Is this a cool down error for leaving SC?

No, if you join a loyalist unit and you leave you will have the remainder of the contract or loyalist contract with you...
To join your old unit you will have to break which is only about 1.2 million with a 3 day cooldown after that you fan join back with your unit

I didn't think there was a cooldown if you weren't changing factions.

Yes and No. The OP was signed to a Permanent Loyalty contract of Smoke Jaguar (which means his contract is longer than the 7 day contract of his original unit). When he breaks contract, it immediately drops him to a 3 day contract (which prevents him from changing factions), but he can then immediately join any unit of the same faction that has a current longer contract (his original unit, assuming that contract has not counted down below 3 days).

Vxheous is correct, My unit had just started a 7 day with Smoke Jag and it let me join after I had a 3 day cool down.
