- arms, but only if the gun is mounted in the arm as well. You don't need the ammo anymore once the gun is gone
- legs
- head
- center torso, because once it is cored, it doesn't make a big difference anyway whether they pierce your engine or hit the ammo right away
- side torsos

So - Where's Your Ammo?

I've never done the math, but I suspect it may be better to use 1/2 ton ammo bins as crit padding for weapons and heatsinks.

If there's a shield side, then I fill that arm after the other arm.
Exceptions to the above:
- If my arms are otherwise empty, and there's an incentive to down-armour them to save weight, I might put ammo in a torso section instead of arms. Especially if there're lots of stuff in that torso section for crit buffering.
- Gauss ammo wherever the rifle is for crit buffering.

I have seen plenty of "ammo explosion" logs on my screen after dying. Not sure they caused the death but they happen even though I am very cautious about where I put ammo, so I have to assume your algorithms are wrong.

On faster / lighter mechs, put ammo in arms and cockpit, because enemies will always try to shoot your legs out from under you to slow you down.
Although ammo in arms is dependent on how much you torso twist your arms to block shots to your torso.
Ammo explosions are much more common now that Clan mechs have targeting computers to increase their crit chance.
I've even had a mech die from an ammo explosion, and then kill another nearby mech with the same ammo explosion after my death.

I might even crit-pad a XL ST with ammo, because the chance of ammo explosion is so minuscule and it's better to get a few ammo bins destroyed than the IS XL...
Seeing as I've only been killed by ammo explosions a handful (read: less than ten) of times over three years playing, I see no reason to change how I distribute my ammo.

Your engine cannot be crit, PGI has never implemented it as a critable item for the entire duration of the game. Either you die when one of your 3 torsos goes with an IS XL, CT goes on an Standard or CT OR both sides on a Clan XL.
It looks for 3 crits to disable you but they only go out in the event of location destruction

Unless it's Gauss, Gauss Ammo goes where the Gauss Rifle is for crit padding as it doesn't explode (often in half ton increments).

Well, the Engine is actually used for Crit Padding. It has 15 HP (across all 6-12 slots).
It dies fast, but it takes Crits. Worse than an AC20, with less HP.
The Crits just have no additional effect. Same for cockpit items and actuators. 10 HP for those.
