Is there a trick to getting these weapons to jam less, or is it a random chance? I tried fiddling around with it in the testing grounds, but I can't seem to identify a pattern to it.

Although some 'Mechs have quirks to reduce the jam chance. This is the only "way" I know to decrease the chance

If you REALLY want to prevent jamming, only fire when the cooldown bar is empty or hold the trigger. this will make it perform at roughly the same rate as a regular AC5. The jamming only occurs when you try to get off a second or third (or fourth if you're super lucky I guess) shot while the gun "spins" for the next salvo. So it's kinda like a gamble for an extra shot.

Don't worry about jams. Some (very) experienced players ran an extensive test on multiple UACs and the result is that the average DPS (damage per second) that you get when you just spam the fire button is much higher for all ultra autocannons (except the clan UAC2) compared with if you used them as regular autocannons. For each time it jams, you do double damage 3 to 4 times as often, so it's worth it. When it jams that's the time that you go find cover and wait for it to unjam.
98% of the time you don't want to use UACs as regular ACs, because why sacrifice the additional weight and slots if you're not going to use it for its real purpose. 2% for when you simply don't have enough time to double tap because you're torso twisting or something.

^^^ This
But yeah, at least to answer your question, yeah, there is a way to prevent jamming the gun. But from what blackhawk said, it's worth that risk.

Jam chance is 14% for CUAC2, 15% for UAC5 and CUAC5, 16% for CUAC10 and 17% for CUAC20.
This can be reduced by quirks on certain mechs, for example JM6-DD has -30% jam chance, which makes for 10,5%.
Other than this, the jams occur randomly and there's equal chance of jamming each time you fire when the UAC is on cooldown.

this is true for the Inner Sphere UAC5 but not for the Clan UACs, even if you do not like the jam chance it is still worth using Clan UACs over Clan ACs because they cost about half as much and (usualy) take up less slots, if you want Clan normal ACs just hold down fire on Clan UACs

Thanks for those numbers. I will continue to spam away then!
