Now, I know that MWO isn't exactly an MMO, but it is an online game with a large player base, many of whom will be online at the same time.

And I know MWO isn't EVE Online (which the links below are about), but few can argue that EVE Online is one of the most complex, most successful persistent online games ever created.

A few ideas may be gleaned, and there's a few traps to avoid...

I agree that MW:O needs a better server system. Splitting us up into UK and US servers really irritates me. It's the biggest gripe i got with MW:O at the moment.
To tell you the truth i prioritise that higher than my own favorite mech and everybody knows that getting your favorite mech into the game means a lot.

I also agree with that Australia needs some attention but not quite in the way you think. They need a server in Asia to prevent lag.
If we could have a server system where everyone played in the same like in EVE then that would really impress me.

Sydney, Aus here.

I usually get better pings to US-West servers than I do to Asia. Traceroute often shows we bounce off the states and across the pacific twice to Asian servers, but even when we're supposedly direct we tend to at best break even to US-W. As muh as I'd like servers over in Aus we have a low population and very high cost of living that makes server space rental more expensive. The game would have to be huge to maintain enough playerbase support for it not to be a hindrance over just sharing US-W with pacific priority routing.

As for servers, I always prefer to at least have the option of playing together. As another thread suggested, just make it so we can move our chars between the servers so we can favor better pings or playing with mates (think how Diablo 3 works server wise).
