I'm getting a bit bored with using laser vomit mechs. I'm wondering which IS mechs would be good ballistic mechs. Could you guys tell me what mechs would be good for: Light, medium and heavy,

Hunchback 4G for a medium for sure, AC/20 love. Centurion is a great mech to.

Wolverine can do ballistics as well. For heavy I am currently using the Marauder and the Orion, but Jagermech for that DAKKA! Don't forget the Cataphract either.

Lights I don't have much experience with.

Blackjacks and Jagermechs. And the new Hunchback IIC has 4 ballistic slots 2 in each shoulder.

King Crab (4x UAC5s), Marauder (2x AC5s, 1x AC2), Mauler (4x AC5s), Cataphract IM (3x UAC5s), Cataphract 4X (4x AC5s -or- 2x AC5s and 2x AC2s), Shadowhawk 2H (3x AC2s)...

In short, there are a lot of ways the IS can satisfy your dakka cravings :)

IS Lights don't have much in the way of ballistic mechs. There is the Urbanmech, which is not to be underestimated. There's of course the Ballistic Panther variant. Then there are a handful of lights that utilize a fair amount of machine guns.

For IS Mediums the Hunchback and Centurion are nice, as already mentioned. The Blackjack is also an excellent ballistic choice. Then there's the Shadowhawk, which also acts like a jumping Hunchback if built as such. Also don't underestimate the ballistic Cicada and Trebuchet variants.

Then on the Heavy front you can't go without mentioning the Jagermech and Cataphract. Of course there's also the Dragon, and there's some respectable ballistics to be found on the Orion, as well.

The Hunchback IIC is NOT an IS mech, though. IIC even means "Second Generation, Clan Technology".

So how are the centurions and Shadow hawks? I was eyeing the Marauder online store pack.

Shadow Hawks are great, high shoulder mount means it is great for hill bumping. Centurions are tough due to great hitboxes and shield arms.

You asked earlier what variants of the Centurion for ballistics. I'd say the AH. It quirks are great for ballistics.

Thing is, if it doesn't jam, the dual uac 5 hits like an ac 20, but from twice the distance. And with a beautifully fast refire rate. Of course, then it jams, but whatever, you should pop back into cover every once and a while anyways.

As for the STD 200, that's just what she came with. Though... to be fair, I do have a tendancy to under engine an overgun my battlemechs. If you want to rebuild my Shadowhawk series, you'd wanna purchase STD 170s... Just sayin'

you have received some good advice on other Mechs but little on Lights

there are 3 Light Mechs designed to carry large balistics,
UrbanMech,
Kit Fox (Prime right arm, S left torso, S right torso, C left arm Omnipods)
Adder, (B left arm Omnipod)
if you want ballistics other than machine guns on other light Mechs that tends to require a significant trade off, in speed, armor or both.

the following Light Mechs are able to take ballistics but going larger than a UAC5 will usualy require a small engine or reduced armor.
Raven (Hugin, 2x, 4x)
Firestarter (Ember, H)
Locust (1v, 3v, Pirates Bane) (if you want to be able to both move and have armor max of AC2)
Spider (5k, Anazi) (anything smaller than an AC20, but to take a Gauss you will not be going fast or taking much ammo or armor)
Panther (10p)
Arctic Cheetah (B right arm omnipod)
Cicada (3m, 3C) (the consensus of the player base is that it is an overweight Light, ignore the fact that it weighs 40 tones technically making it a medium)

In heavies, Jagermech rocks autocannons like no other. In mediums, BJ-1/BJ-1DC can do the same schtick. But IMO somewhat heavier mechs are better suited for ballistics, and BJ's vs. JM's are to me a case in point. I tend to favour lasers in BJ's.

Then you have plenty of mechs like WVR and SHD which can run ballistics but which I wouldn't really call "ballistic mechs", as the loadouts tend to be somewhat mixed. But there are exceptions like the twin UAC5 SHD-5M and the triple AC2 SHD-2H.

Definitely the Jager over all.

There is a Dragon that can shoot dual AC5s very fast. Wolverine as well.

Marauders do well with them too, esp the 3R.

The lightest universaly usable ballistic weapon is the AC2 with 6 tonns or ( 5 tonns for Clans )
MGs work mostly against structure and crits not against armor.
So basicaly...the more tonnage the more dakka.
I won't realy consider putting ballistics on an light mech except for trolling purposes or spezialized structure rippers with MGs.
( hey LBX Spider is totaly fun and the reactions of enemy mechs are completly hillarious )

Mediums with ballistics:
I'm somewhat surprised the Blackjack wasn't mentioned so far.

An a Mech that should not be absent from any thread concerning Dakka:
