I find it terribly annoying and so many otherwise interesting designs fall apart totally because everything is mounted right along the waist-line.
Why!? Its pointless!

But why does it have to be 80% of all IS mechs with weapons down along the waist line? >_<
IS mechs have a lot of mechs with low hanging arms good for brawling, this also means low weapon mounts. The do have high mount mechs like the Jagermech, Black Jack, Catapult, and some others that have the high weapon mounts but can't really do much in terms of shielding. You also get hybrids like the Battlemaster and Thunderbolt with high mounts on the torso but low ones on the arms.
Trend is similar looking at Clan mechs too. You have a lot with high mounts on the torso then low ones on the arms but then you get a few that have all high mounted weapons like the Shadow Cat.

The issue isnt hardpoint location, the issue is the limited number of maps that allow low hardpoints to be effective. Look how bad the Summoner is since it's arms are pretty much below its waist and it has the highest mounted cockpit.

The IS mechs face a lot of infantry, tanks and guerilla which are on the ground.

But we don't have infantry, tanks or guerilla tactics in MWO. So that's moot point.

I think when these mechs were originally invented, it was for a table top board game where such concerns weren't really a thing. Even then mechs are drawn with the ability to raise their arms to fire. Overall there are just some things that didn't translate well to a game like this (or the previous Mechwarrior titles either).
It just is what it is.

Apparently PGI should just defer all lore and asthetics and provide us narrow rectangles with all weapons mounted on top to maximize their hit boxes and hard point placement.
This is what happens when there is no understanding or appreciation of the lore or the fluff or the universe it resides in... It all distillate down to myopic meta driven generic sterility.
I blame PGI for doing such a piss poor job of coloring in the lore and fluff for new players...
Ignorance is why folks try to rewrite history...

That would make PP FLD damage even more over powered. Missiles would be even more useless...
