The following suggestion is based upon a simple idea. People who play together are wanting to have a unit or group name behind which they can all be recognized.
So here it goes.
What if players within a house were allowed to form their own units using a simple system. As soon as you get enough players to have a lance you get the first available number for the lance. You also can name your lance. As soon as your lance gets to company size you upgrade your referencing to the first available number for companies. As soon as you get to battalion level you get the first open battalion number.
Example. I get three friend together and we make a lance unit. Upon making it we decide to call it "the Brethren". The system looks and decides the first open number for lances is the 328th. So we will go by the 328th lance of House Davion "the brethren". If we get enough members to become a company we will then lose the 328th lance and move up to the new number we are assigned which might be the 73rd company of House Davion "the brethren". Eventually regiment level forces will form and hopefully each house will have several player made regiments floating around. You could have the 1st regiment of House Davion "mighty mean mechs". This method will allow players to name their units, but still not have control of key names in canon. You can easily strike out names you don't want players to use in the unit names and the system assigns their number so they do not control that.
Anyway the point is that players within houses should be able to make a unit within the house militaries which will allow them to collectively build a reputation for themselves. Some units will be known as being good, some great, and some ok. Players will then have the ability to the same structure that they could have in a merc unit while remaining within a house.
