In the war between the Gods and the Titans, Atlas and his brother sided with the Titans, and for that they were punished. The gods imprisoned Atlas' brother in Mt. Tartarus with the other titans, Atlas they sent to the west end of the earth where he would forever hold the heavens on his shoulders.

After killing the gorgon, Medusa, Perseus took pity and showed Atlas the severed head. The eyes of Medusa turned the giant Atlas to stone, and he slept the deep sleep of the mountain, no longer feeling the weight of the sky.
