I'm thinking about getting a few, however I'd like the sincere opinion of those who have used it (especially as close range fighters, especially after the re-balancing that took place).
You see, I don't like LRMS, never have, for me, brawling is the most fun experience.

With that said, I have considered Kintaro builds such as:
KTO-18 - 4xASRM6 + 1xASRM4
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...9fa14bc8ece36fa

Or something with a standard engine perhaps like this KTO-20:
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...b7bc30a0b0c5b83

My questions are as follows:

1.Are Kintaro's XL-friendly? do the Kintaros arms shield you in any meaningful way?
is it feasible to spread damage? etc.
2.If it is possible to use such close range builds, would you say they're better employed in a 'hit-and-run' fashion, perhaps similar to things like the splatpult with its SRM ears?.

If Kintaro's can be used as short range fighters, builds are welcome.

Lets see, I'd say the Kints are roughly as XL friendly as the Shawks and Griffins. Before the latest SRM storm I was running a SRM-30 KTO-18 and absolutely loved it. I'd venture to say you definitely want an XL in most Kint builds, the ability to disengage and relocating being more valuable than any additional "tankiness".

Hit and Run is the name of the game since you haven't the range or heat capacity for an extended toe to toe.

I've said before that anything the Kintaro can do, the Shadowhawk or Griffin can do better. That applies to both SRM and LRM builds. Sarna.net referred to the Kintaro essentially as "just another mech with missiles", and whilst Sarna isn't a real resource for the viability of MWO mechs, I'd say it's nonetheless true.

I prefer the standard engine, but that's mainly because I'm a mediocre player. It is feasible to spread damage across the Kintaro's broad torso, and I guess the arms are kind of useful—however, using them as shield arms loses you your backup lasers fairly quickly, and some of your missiles too if you shield with the left. XL or STD, I'd say that the Kintaro is not a brawler, really, but more a hit and run mech. Take a Kintaro into a brawl and it will be rather painful for you.

Except pack 5 launchers which 2 of the Kintaros can do. I own them all, the 18 is my favorite mech and with the 5x5 lrm and erll build consistently gets 600+ dmg with the occasional 200 on a bad loss. It is a bonus machine.

OP, the KTO 18 is an excellent srm6 boat. 1 splat end most lights from any angle and a back shot ends most bigger mechs, on chainfire 5 srm6 are nasty business and if you refrain from using the lasers you can kill most mechs before getting to hot.
XL300 5 srm6 and 2 ml, run a seismic sensor and hide behind corners, give them a splat then toggle chainfire. It takes a second for the CT doors to open and they fire first, so if you just chainfire there is a scary little pause where they might get a shot on you. The splat fires the other 4 and then the ct launcher about a half sec later.

I run the 19 with either 4 srm6 and 3 medium lasers or 4 srm4 and 2 LL, this one is for run and gun, alpha and move.

They spread damage fairly well, the ct is the only real issue and its not bad. The arms are small but the st boxes are really good. Standard engine is pointless because most deaths are from ct.

if you get them try the 18 with an xl 300 1 erll 5 lrm5 tag and 8t of ammo. You might change your mind on lrms, no other mech does them like this. anything that matches the hardpoints is way slower.

It's been forever since I've ran a Kintaro other than the Golden Boy and the build I run on that is 5 LRM 5s with 2 ML and a TAG. It just didn't do SRMs very well in my opinion but it really excels with the LRMs. It's one of my therapy mechs for when I've been doing poorly.
To answer your other questions, OP, I'd say that it is pretty XL friendly since the CT seems large and the arms aren't very good for shielding so I wouldn't count on it.

Just make sure your weapon door toggle is bound to something accessible, and this becomes a minimal issue.

I have the 18 myself, I think I might switch to an all-LRM build as well.

If you are good at positioning and flanking its a soul destroyer.
Since the pts and quirks patch on the 1st the 19 might just be the new spam king. Its srm quirks got folded in to general quirks, with the 20% cooldown and module it does with 4 lrm5 what the 18 does with 5 and carries 2 LL.

OP this build just remove the lrms with srm4s and you are good to go.

Its risky running both lasers in the right arm but I like to keep my bindings simple and side peek. The arms are small. Heat on that build is 1.29

The ton you save from not having jumpjets like a shawk or griffin is useful for ammo and backup weapons, its fairly xl-"safe" and also has the advantage over the shadowhawk of actually being able to properly use artemis on its missile racks (the shawk has missile spots in head and ct, precluding you from srm6s in those spots, or even a 4 in the head). I'd put Kintaros in between Griffins and Shawks as far as brawling goes.

OP if you are still interested I am adding builds to my thread focused on the new quirks and weapon buffs. As a brawler there will be a lot of ideas for you.
