Conquest, Skirmish, Assault.

All these are supposed to bring a different set of objectives, providing a different gaming experience in each of them.

But the fact is, (at least on my T2 experience) they often turn into skirmish modes, no matter what.

I think there are 2 major reasons for this:
1 - The mechs are fast in their most part. So even if they need to go for bases (on conquest) after killing most of the enemy, they will be able to get the bases needed to secure the win
2 - The maps are small enough to provide this kind of strategy to rule above the others, rendering at least conquest mode, obsolete.

I know this is subject is open to a lot of debate regarding team coordination, skills, map awareness, etc. But 9 out of 10 conquest matches end up turning into skirmish.

Not that I don't like skirmish, I'm actually good with any kind of mode, but I'd like to have something done to prevent skirmish to be only usable mode

What can I say? everyone loves destroying big stompy mechs, bit by bit. Shows the core game mechanic is liked and working well.

That said, the objectives in assault and conquest lack imagination, especially when compared to CW. Standing in a laser fence next to a random object doesn't do it for me. Certainly assault should have destructible bases at the very least.

For me, being able to cause panic by standing on the enemy base is a fun game dynamic, that is missing from pure skirmish, even if in the end, 9/10, its won by destroying 12 enemy mechs.

Well the BIGGEST issue with game modes is it doesn't pay you well to complete the game mode when you can get better pay by fighting it out, usually in the middle of the map. The next biggest issues is the design of the maps which funnel everyone to the center. Example of this would be River City and the citadel, Caustic Valley and the nascar around the sulfur volcano, Terra Therma and the actual volcano, and then you have other maps like frozen city which funnel you to the same spots over and over to the base of the drop ship or the cradle at the other end of the busted drop ship. There are more examples of bad map designs (like Alpine Peaks), but I am pretty sure I have given enough.

If the placements of the conquests where placed in new places or randomly on a system placement would help hopefully change it up. As for Assault the lances start so far away and now the removal of the turrets (turrets have been removed for some time) I am surprised we haven't seen defensive matches again or light mechs rushing the caps.

All in all the pay and map designs are the worst on many of the maps which deter people from actually playing the game mode and you see more of it turn into a big melee as every match goes on.

What if Assault was Attack/Defend and you switched sides and the highest aggregate score won? What if Conquest required you to keep a mech on base to win? What if there was a mode where the objective moved?

What if all matches were not 12 v 12? What if there were 8 v 8? 4 v 4? 24 v 24?

What if CW involved all three modes and like climate maps were grouped together to give immersion of say a desert planet or frozen planet? What if CW was tug of war using all three modes? What if final battles were fought for control of cities?

That just scratches the "what if" surface of MWO. MWO could be so much more, especially given the amount of money the developers have had to work with. Someday maybe.
