So is there a "items for marketing purposes" versus "items directly sold in an attempt to profit" kind of situation, then?
I don't have any mind for the complexities of big IP licensing, copyrights, trademarks, patents, etc...and, obviously, the flip-side of litigating when any of those things I just listed are "yours" and somebody-not-you (in your opinion) is trying to violate your IP rights, et al, which are the major valuation of most digital goods organization, or other entities who produce, design, or have ever produced or designed any good that is durable, physical, and *cough* repossess-able...

)
More seriously, though, is that (in my really limited grasp of this type of situation) a company like PGI would need to project a plan to pay rights holder(s) a fee to utilize that IP-controlling-org's property, setup production after acquiring the 'blessing' to pursue whatever each group agrees is allowable to make and sell, and then --AND this is the scariest part-- customers buy enough of those goods to cover the fee PGI lays out just to get to make and sell those items in the first place... which means we gotta buy the Hades outta some upper body garments, neck lanyards, coasters, posters, and doo-dads & tchotchkes & nick-nacks, knack-a-brack, and the ever-accumulating-on-my-desk/mech cockpit menace called "crap"
I'd love this stuff, and cafe press can do many things at decent quality upon demand, but obviously user-sellers don't clear a staggering amount of pure profit, so I doubt that'd pay the licensing fees, and possible that contracts may limit 3rd-party production options or what not...IDK about all that... however, I'm happy to invest what is, to me & the wife, a sizable-though-reasonable to us & our budget, in quality entertainment, and Battletech/MWO being a 3+ decade love affair of mine, in novels and tabletop games (cardboard counters & stuff in early-1990's) and PC games, and even that canonically-deficient 1990's cartoon that I just learned about last week... but the cost on anything beyond the amount that I can painlessly invest in MWO isn't painless, obviously, and given the choice between a kickin'-cool graphic t-shirt, or hoodie, versus another row of mech bays, or a mastery pack IN-game, there is no real debate: I gots t-shirts already. I ain't gots ________'s newest mech pre-order -- and w/ all those extra goodies!
But, again, some clever, or aesthetically-pleasing MWO gear would be displayed prominently & proudly by me, and I'd love that chance to do that... just not in lieu of what I strategically snipe-purchase, and really enjoy inside the BT Universe.
And my wife chimes in, says I'm putting WAY too much effort into this post, and that owning MWO mechs and stuff digitally, or even on my desk, is a far cry from her allowing me to sport just *any* design of MWO clothing... and she assures me a large subset of "mech nerds" are "covert."
I defer to the charming Lady from the great state of Georgia, planet Earth, Sol System, Spiral Arm of Milky Way Galaxy in this particular area.
TL;DR: big mechs, and talented jockeys are cool in-game. How cool would we look decked out in MWO gear proclaiming that fact?
