I'd be fine with a single weapon type having multiple manufacturers, each with their own unique quirk or two.

Exactly, the fact that we have such a huge gap between machine guns and autocannons is ridiculous.

That just needs to be changed and it's fine; give it enough DPS and ammo per ton and suddenly even a mech like the SDR-5V could have some decent firepower.

They do. So youd have to get rid of the canon rule that makes them do -3 damage to mechs and rework their stats a bit.

But the game definitely needs more lightweight ballistic options.

I doubt that adding additional ballistic weapons would help the SDR-5V, as its only weapons are two CT-mounted lasers.

Some mechs will need quirks regardless due to poor geometry, hitboxes, hardpoints, and a host of those deficiencies.

Quirk its acceleration, braking, twist speed, etc. Give it a higher engine cap.

I always hoped that the manufacturing brands would substitute weapon quirks in a way. There is a lot of potential in them but I wonder how well they could balance them.

If they are going to quirk weapons, they would need to do it based off faction choices.

This is going to help the Spider-5V how exactly?

You need to think about this a bit more than just making it super agile, while it has pea shooters for weapons.
