I'm going to name my catapult "Pop Tart", and just hide behind rocks.

I will definitely be going with the Catapult. Yes, you can get the Trebuchet with jump jets, but you will make yourself more vunerable in the process. Plus the heat sink problem with the 'bucket' is an issue as well.

It all depends on play style really, as the devs have said multiple times. however, it would make sense that when your a long range gunboat, you would want more armor and missiles. Plus jumpjets for DOA. Why would you want to be a slightly faster but less powerful gunboat? Not like you can run away from a madcat anyways.

More than anything, I choose the Catapult because of its jump jets. If I want a quick raider with some longrange punch the Trebuchet (especially the jumping variant if possible).

I choose the catapult because mine has a 25% more C-bill earned per game.

Well the 15 extra tons of the catapult make a double LRM 20 build possible (with the Artemis IV system). I don't think any kind of finagling will ever get the extra weight into a trebuchet. It just barely fits into the catapult with enough room for 4 tons of LRM ammunition, and 3 medium pulse lasers. Then again the whole thing does come with a 12,000,000 CB price tag but that's another story.

Jump jets should let you make a hasty retreat at the very least and might even allow you to reach a position that mechs without jets can't reach.

That's also a really good selling point!

trebuchet is there because of it's movement speed. if there's a firesupport lance of 2 catapults and 2 trebuchets, and it (as a whole, just for the example) gets hit by a brawler lance, then I'm gonna bet the trebuchets will actually succeed in fleeing. Catapults? not so much. to my view, that's what it really boils down to.

That being said, the Catapult IS a great mech and with some lostech lovin's it can really shine.

the trebuchet will probably cost less to repair

Also, just a small side question/statement. I thought the Catapult was armed with LRM - 20's, is this a varient?

the catapult CPLT-C4 have 2x lrm 20 and 2x small laser

You have to remember factions. For instance the Trebuchet is a Marik mech, while the Catapult is a Liao mech.

It wont be restricted by faction. There will only be a C-bill difference. Also the Trebuchet is cheaper since it's a medium mech.

both mechs have the same amount of ammo, and from my experience from the table top game I would rather have a 5/8 spd then a 4/6/4 spd. For those of you that do not know the speed terms they are walk/run/jump.

does the catapult not also have an arrow IV system which allows for its missiles to fall in a tighter radius?

The catapault is better suited for assault fire support, while the Trebuchet is capable of being mobile fire support and scout fire support. Use the Cat in your front ranks and put Tre's on the flanks for maximum saturation of firepower on a target.

Another way to break it down is this, the Cat is your heavy ranged support and your Tre is a fast flanker that can move as needed for better hits or to avoid Fire Hunter Teams.

the arrow IV version was produced later by Liao for teaming up with there Ravens. The problem is it only had 5 arrow IV missiles, but there damage was heavy.

Heres what I came up with as a sexy version of the trebuchet. I went with the jump jet version

movement is 5/8/5
double heat sinks 11 total
1x PPC
1x Large laser
1x Medium laser
1x SRM-6 (only one ton of ammo tho)
armor is 161 out of 169,
ferro fibrous armor and endo steel chasis make this possible, so no xplody engine needed.
Heat if firing everything is 26 and only 22 cooled however.

Still thats a pretty jumpy mech, and may reach spots the catapult cant. How it plays may be an entirely different thing then how I envision it though ( a semi sniper with run awayyy abilities)

another option is to drop the large laser and replace it and the srm with some LRMs, but I like this build myself.
