What's with these steadily increasing tonnage limits for cw drop decks? What are you trying to accomplish? Who would even bring a light anymore?
As my good friend Faernix pointed out, if you average out all the tonnages from all weight classes you get 232.5 tons. This figure should be the starting point for drop deck limits. Perhaps boost it by 5 tons and round up to 240 to give some minor flexibilIty.
Maybe I'm missing something, but then again, everyone I talk to seems puzzled as well. Please explain what your end-goal is here PGI.

Agreed, this whole thing is getting a little out of hand. I figure it started in an effort to either help new players round out their with trials (cause 90- and 100-tonner trial assaults), or to allow IIc owners to bring all their new toys to CW in a single drop, but it's more or less obsoleting lights and most mediums.

Higher tonnage limits = people want to bring bigger 'mechs = more grinding to buy bigger 'mechs = more matches played = game seems "more active" in numbers/statistics and thus more attractive to possible investors maybe ?.
Also: more need for grinding leads to more people taking shortcuts and paying money for 'mechs.

Could be a way of preparing us for a two tier system within CW
Invasion (heavy tonnage) 12 mans
and
Scout/Raid (light tonnage) 4 mans
Could just be shaking things up for variety.

Could also be the recent Clan Origin's release. You should have noticed that the increased tonnage limits correspond quite well with the release of Origins and if you take one of each mech, you get the Clan's drop-deck limit.
...which, if true, I find hilarious because none of them are really viable for CW right now...

It was not just that. The larger and more active factions were under Clan contract after Steam release, and more IS pugs/steamers were dropping into CW with IS trial mechs and suffering. Increasing the tonnage, first for IS side, allowed IS trial assaults to be brought into CW, so a deck - Atlas/KG, T-bolt, Enforcer/Hunch. Prior to that the trial deck would be T-bolt/Cat/Enforcer/Hunch, or trade out one of those for a raven/jenner. Again, barely any meat vs the Clan Trial deck Twolf/ Stormcrow/Cheetah/+another or the normal Clan deck on the side with the larger population. After that the merc switched to IS.
Even if the Skill tree had not seen a drastic cut (affected both techs) and some of the Clan tech reduced (primarily ERML and Gauss Rifle) with the tonnage increase then the merc population move, the map and the drops would not have changed much, the Clans would have still lost ground. That is cause the tonnage increase allowed mercs and vets to bring heavier mechs with more firepower and armor to soak up incoming fire. The IS has more effective lighter assaults than the Clans have, due more so to better weapon placement and type, whereas the Clans have to depend more on the T-wolf/Jag/Warhawk/Hellbringer, leaving the poor Gargoyle/Executioner behind due to low-slung arms that can not be raised above their navels...

Now, if/when PGI lowers the tonnage, say to 240/230, that would be 1Bmaster/T-bolt or two t-bolts/2blackjacks vs twolf/hellbringer or jag/stormcrow/cheetah. Then the difference is how the mechs are deployed, drop order/tactics used.
