Since you can just switch pieces out from other variants, can you purchase a main piece to have the mech classed as another variant or worst case scenario all of just the base pieces (to save some cbills for a newbie) or do you still need to buy 3 variants of an omnimech to then elite to then master for balance reasons, to make it fair to IS mechs?

Yeah, they instated the 3 Mechs to master rule under the premise that a Pilot cannot truly master a chassis unless they pilot at least 3 distinct variants.
The term "distinct" falls by the wayside with OmniMechs, unfortunately.

Well you may get one "distinct" one but word is the other 2 are usually just the "stinct" kind.
