A Good Game Recorder?

Currently using LoiLo which I like and all.... but here is the deal...
Since all of them I have tried so far record in .avi ...the file sizes for a match are huge.. Usually anywhere from 2-5gigs. So I convert them to MPEG-4 or WMV using MS Movie Maker... The problem with that is that it severely degrades the quality to where you can't read much of anything.
Any advice on a good recorder or a good converter from .avi to whatever for these file sizes to upload etc.? I am not wanting to end up with a converter that packs in a bunch of adware etc... I just had to wipe my drives on a 2 month old Area51 (One drive went bad) but want to try and keep it as "clutter free" as possible this round. My M17x has all the game goodies on it for when I used to travel a lot but has so many "free software" glitches on it that it needs a wipe too. Since I got this new rig I want to play it safe...
Thanks in advance...

Shadow Play is lightweight and creates MP4 files with settings for bit rate and FPS.

Actually....it looks like it was already on this machine lol. I never really look at all that stuff other than card settings.

MSI Afterburner works with any card, not just MSI branded ones

Handbrake will compress video from nearly a GB down to a few dozen MBs

The only drawback I found is that some game crashes (which happens more often with MWO than other games) will turn off Shadow Play, and then I have to open GeForce Experience and turn it on again.
If someone is wondering, I do not work for nVidia, I just faced exactly the same problems OP reports and Shadow Play was the perfect solution up to this day.

I hate nvidia support... been using their cards for a decade and always some issue that is simple like this...or their driver support. Brand new machine and the software for it doesn't like the cards. Have also noticed MWO does NOT like triple cards... I run 100% better frame rate with a single card turned on.
I am trying this MSI and got it setup but it seems to want to make one single huge video file. I like starting and stopping per match to create a file. Helps me keep track... I record EVERY GAME and discard junk runs so I use it a lot. Haven't seen a frame rate display for the MSI but seems to be working for the most part.

Possibly because you have 3? i am not a technical person so i am not much help sorry. However i will say that the Hardware and Accessories forum here on MWO is a great starting point. They basically helped me buy a new rig.

Fraps is a gigantic pain, because you have to know in advance when you want to record, whereas Shadowplay lets you record 100% of the time and only save it when you had a worthwhile game. Its great.

Assuming I get it working (on pause now so I can play..will look into issue later), how is the file size? What format?

Not at home right now, but pretty big, similar size to fraps if i recall correctly. Something like 8GB for a 20 minute file. and mp4 i think - it saves to a temp file which it continually overwrites so you always have the last 20 mins recorded (you can alter that number), then when you use the save hotkey (alt+f10 default) it dumps the current file to another directory and starts again.

The format is completely customiseable anything from 490 p to 2k resolution.
File size varies on average at 2k I am about 6 gigs for 15 minutes. That is the save the last 20 minutes feature for me.
A single recorded math in 2k runs me about 3 to 4o gigs.

That said, I use the "New ShadowPlay", simply called "Share" in the current Beta version of GeForce Experience. For some reason, the old ShadowPlay never worked properly for me since an update a few months ago. It would act like it recorded when I told it to save, and even show the icon change that it was saving, yet when I went to the folder, there would be nothing.
The new Share feature is working like a champ for me now though. The ShadowPlay button is now gone from GeForce Experience and you have a Share Button. You turn on Recording, and then it works like ShadowPlay of old...where it records your most recent stuff and if you want to save it, hit Alt F-10 and it does so.

But both NVidia and AMD cards have their own free software tools though, Shadowplay and AMD Gaming Evolved (respectively). Both of which can keep a recording running in the background and hit a button to save off what was recorded. I set my AMD tool to record 10 minutes and I can hit CTRL-F2 to save that last ten minutes. Perfect for when I had a game that I want to share!

I rely on Nvidia ShadowPlay heavily, but also use OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) at times.
