The files can be created with just about any 3d modeling software
Blender
Cad
etc.
If the machine you're using supports the file type, yes you should be able to just fine. I've pulled a few and had them fabricated at a metal shop before.
EDIT:
Also
3d printers can print out of
plastic
wood
metal
cloth
etc.
It just depends on the individual machine you don't have to go outside of a 3d printer to achieve that if you don't want to.

Why are people wanting video game companies to make models? Catalyst Game Labs has all the production rights to the Battletech tabletop properties, they're the ones who would make new models if anyone. The good news is that it's much more likely now that Catalyst, HBS, and PGI have agreed to share art assets, as now they actually have access to the rights for PGI's designs.
