I generally don't use LRMs but I have one MAD build that uses them since there weren't many options and it performs surprisingly well. 2 A-LRM15, 4 MPL, TAG, BAP.
LRMs do spread damage which can be ineffective but with enough ammo and firing time they will wear down opponents.
However, perhaps their more effective role is suppression of enemy fire. The cockpit shake and light show from being hit by LRMs makes aiming almost impossible (certainly precision aiming). Using TAG ... an LRM boat can quickly get a lock and send off a series of chain fired LRMs that do three things .. they suppress the target, damage the target, and frequently push the target back into cover so they don't fire at your team mates (or you).
Anyway, I am personally still not much of an LRM fan and I still feel that an Atlas D-DC sitting at the back spewing LRMs at targets under cover is bit of a waste ... but I have come to find that under some circumstances and in certain roles LRMs can be a useful complement. They aren't as useless as I once thought
