can I do this through the forums, or only in-game. I could't see anything in-game last night that looking like a "leave unit" button or anything.

or else use the leave unit button on the bottom left of the UI in faction play tab (quite unintuitive)

It's not very intuitive to think you need to go to the Faction Tab, that is for sure.

This is where the "Leave Unit" and the corresponding "Disband Unit" buttons should be. Maybe we're mixing things up and you want to know how to leave a faction (House Davion, Clan Wolf etc.) instead of leaving a Unit?
EDIT: In case imgur is make trouble again, here is a direct link to the picture:

Okay sport, here's what you gotta do:
1. Make a thread accusing SJR of hacking on the forum
2. Make a second thread when the first is deleted
3. Make a thread accusing AS of hacking on the forum
4. When people mock you, resort to racial slurs
5. When realizing you've gone too far, take it 100 steps further
6. Post 3 threads apologizing to PGI about going too far while invalidating your apology with more racial slurs and cursing
7. Make your unit embarrassed
8. Unit kicks you out
This is my understanding on how it's best to leave a unit based upon observation.

Nah, that doesn't work, my guys shoot me all the time, but we are pirates, so...
As for leaving your unit, there is a button under the faction tab. As for leaving the Unit you founded, yes, our old CO left and for some strange reason put me in charge as his final act.

well, does not work, if the unit does not kick anyone for personal misbehaviour vs non unit members. sometimes there are people who think you have to stand up to your faults and errors and do not punish you for them by kicking you out.

(ironically, this forum kills the spacing that the alt-codes use to achieve it because it doesn't like lines that begin with spaces, even non-breaking ones)

You could go to all that trouble, or you can just start making high quality "your mom" jokes about your unit leader.
If you're not familiar with a high quality "your mom" joke, I highly recommend Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus (available on Netflix streaming under the title "Titus" with a picture of a blue face...not to be confused with Chris Titus's failed sitcom of the same name). Titus Andronicus is likely Shakespeare's best work as it really is a 2 or 3 hour setup for the greatest your mom joke in literary history.
