Ever see the movie 'Pacific Rim?'
First, love the game...mechanics work great, config is fun, combat is a blast, very competitive...
The one downside is...it's just 12 mans over and over. The vast majority of players
play like pew pew first-person snipers.
Totally understandable. It's hard even with the free voice comms to get
people to cooperate and play unselfishly.
So what I'm thinkin' is, in order to encourage better roles (tank, brawler, flanker, sniper, recon, LRM tag, ECM, etc.), to add something similar to training grounds, but make it active PVE.
This would be completely unrewarded or possibly only rewarded during events (It's the Staypuff marshmallow man....it's all I could think of...). The idea would be to practice vs. Pacific-Rim-like big bad dinosaur/monster AIs that fight back, Godzilla sized...solo, 4 man lance work, and 12-man varieties (3 lances working to take out 3 monsters, or all 12 mechs on one...
The idea isn't to make this World of Mechcraft, but 1. to give something else other than constant 12 man battles, 2. to make active training grounds along with the derelict mechs in the current ones, and 3. to help train pug pilots in more roles than hide and seek, poptart sniper tactics, and start getting people to think as part of a team. I'm tired of seeing people avoid engagement with their Dire Wolves for fear of getting them scratched.

Yes, it was awful and anything related to it must die in a fire.
I do, however, agree with your ideas for group PvE, maybe something like actual missions/campaigns like MW4.
As for group training grounds, just use private match...?
