THat's bleeping smart!
Thats basically what I wrote earlier... however for a fraction of the cost if you make it yourself
headphones (Same as in the modmic link, however just over half price);
http://www.thomann.d...erlux_hd681.htm
Arm for mic (You can use this mic to save additional costs, but the quality is probably meh);
http://www.amazon.de...r/dp/B011BN8KHO
Mic (Good quality) to clip onto the arm;
http://www.amazon.de.../dp/B00029MTMQ/
You can skip the clip on mic if you want to try the cheap mic set first, then you would be at arouns 21 EUR (aprox. 23 USD), otherwise you would be at an additional 9 EUR (10 USD) for the better mic.
If you want to make the arm yourself... there is always the handymans do it yourself company (AKA Lego)

I don't have any issues with the usb as this has an onboard soundcard. You do have to select which device to use before launching for the audio card and restart mwo if you want to change it but works fine haven't ran into any issues

I actually find the sound quality of Steel Series to be quite good for the price range. The biggest issue is they do not seem to be very robust.
But Senheiser is a capital idea.
I recently picked up a Logitech G430 on sale to replace my broken Steel Series. For some reason it sounds incredibly thin and "digitally" on MWO. I had to almost completely EQ out the highs and really boost the bass and low mids to make it not sound like complete crap. The clarity and stereo spacing of frequencies is pretty good, just no oomph or power.
Yet, with other games a flat-ish EQ sounds great with em. Matter of fact, if I use my MWO EQ profile on any other game the sound is way too boomy and rumbly.

Very soon I will be buying a Sennheiser Game Zero and giving my Steel Series to my 14 year old so that he can have a better headset than what he's using.
The buzzing i meant is when someone is using the mic, the mic itself gives of a weird buzzing/hissing noise. Which is very annoying when you're using it in TS at all times.
I personally reviewed a tons of headset at my pricerange, about 100$ at the time, and the choise went to the qpad qh90s, because of their superb mic. And the sound is astounishing aswell. This brand might be slightly unherd of outside of EU, i dunno.
But here in EU they're a highly regarded brand, steelseries esp cyberia ones, are mostly "pay for the brand, get crap quality" thing.
As for TS: Mod mic is the best u can get, if you've already a pair of great headset to use.
Alot of ppl i know use their own headset with a modmic,

Bilbo, I have on occasion had that popping go on for a few matches... always assumed it was a loose plug or something on my end.. I'll listen for it and see if I notice a pattern but you may be right.. something on their end.. maybe heavy server loads during events or something.. dunno.

Only problem is, it's only this game. I can exit the client and play a video and it's crystal clear. Log back in and the popping is back. Last night, it was like that for 2-3 hours, then all of sudden every thing was crystal clear for a couple hours before I quit for the night.

Check your ingame settings, there is audio device selection for different types of sounds. Normally they should all be default and you should the USB headset configured as default device for everything from Windows.
You can direclty select the device from MWO too. And also check the sound volume levels as voip has different settings than rest of the game.

Went to Microsoft to get some help and worked on this for a couple of hours... both the IT guys AND a Specialist. When they get stumped, you know you're in deep doo doo.

You need to make the headset microphone the primary communications device.
