Hello all.

A few days ago I posted asking for advice on the WVR 7(L) and when I went to buy the Wolverine pack I bought the Griffin pack by mistake. I think old age stepped in and I got a bit muddled with the names.

So, last night prior to the patch coming out I decide to take them for a spin. Someone in one of my previous posts said Id like them if I was into SRMs and face hugging. Others said that my mistake had gotten me the better mech - how those words were so true. Its a beast of a brawler.

Well, after a few matches in them Ive got to say Im pleasently suprised with their performance - or to be a little more earthy, those little f****rs rock!

Theyre very durable even running with XLs - a little bit of twisting and shielding with those arms and you can take a pounding - it feels more tanky than my GHPs.

I would never have thought SRMs could be so much fun. Coupled with mLs its either peek, alpha, unpeek or alpha, twist, alpha and enemy mech literally just fall apart. It feels very nimble which helps greatly when peeking. One other thing is it seems to have great pitch range, enabling the pilot to shoot the top of peoples noggins when they're below you.

I get the feeling it is a very underestimated Mech as Ive had the enemy look at me then ignore me and walk on by. They soon learn the error of their ways when I fire an Alpha up their chuffer. I even had a Timber run from me after I landed a couple of "twist and shouts" on it.

Off the top of my head in case your interested, high level specs are (approx) 85 95kph (un basiced), 2 - 5 JJs, 40 - 45 Alpha. It doesnt feel like a hot build - well, the way I built my Sparky is a tad toasty, but the SRM builds (2N and 1S(C)?) feel good.

But theres always a bad bit - I took my 2N out after the patch and whilst the ECM stopped me getting pummelled by Lurms, the shortish range of this build was very apparent. Sadly I had to log at that point so didnt get another try.

All on all, I am really liking the Griffin and it considering I bought it by mistake I dont regret a thing.

If you're looking for an IS Medium and want to be a bit different then the Griffin is worth considering.

Thank you for listening

O7

Indeed. Griffins are great mechs. And that cockpit! Oh, I love that cockpit. So open!

Wolverines are decent too, but I like Griffins a lot more. I find Wolverines tend towards extremely limited loadout options - moreso than Griffins at least.

For a simple energy+missile carrier, there's actually a lot you can do with the Griffin. I keep finding out new and fun ways to use this chassis. Like the GRF-1S with LPL and 3MPL, when people are too close for LRMs.

My favourite GRF-2N build is XL280, 2xSRM6, 2xSRM4, ER PPC, jump jets and ECM. For a long time, I ran 2xML in the arm, but ultimately I realized three things:
  • At close range, it's much more effective to be torso twisting and periodically smashing 20-24 SRMs into people's faces. It's hard to use the lasers effectively while torso twisting, and they're not as effective (damage per heat) as SRMs anyway.
  • At long range, it sucks to not have any weapons at all. Especially when you're trying to close the distance against enemies who are shooting at you. Even a single ER PPC to the face is enough to make a lot of people put their head down instead of firing indiscriminately.
  • In situations where heat is not an issue, the ability to instantly deliver 10 pinpoint damage at any range is worth the extra heat.
Also, the high energy hardpoint on the GRF-3M is great for TAG if you're using LRMs. I play that build with ERPPC+LRMs+TAG.

I never thought of that for the 2N - losing the 2 mls reduces the face time as you dont have to wait on the laser duration. The erPPC makes the mech useful at all ranges.

Thank you for posting that as its most useful.

I shall give that a try
