I just broke my 7 day contract and a 150.000CBill penalty occurred (50.000 per day already run). So far so good. Now I find myself with a contract still displaying for some days, unable to make a new contract, but I did lose the 150.000 CBills.

Is this a bad joke or is this intended?

Nope, to stop people from faction hopping you have a cool-down period where you are still a member of the faction you just quit. If you go to your faction warfare screen you will see a faction expiry timer.

While the originating assumption of the mechanic is valid -- faction jumping causes problems -- the actual mechanic is a little too sweeping. For example, if you quit a unit that belongs to a faction you cant join a unit that belongs to another faction without having to go through the whole cool-down system. Likewise, if you want to join a unit who is part of the SAME faction as you and the unit faction contract is shorter than your individual contract -- you cant join the unit. It gives you a notice that you cant join because the unit's contract is shorter than yours.

Hopefully they make this a little less annoying in the spring/summer CW update. In reality a person's faction loyalty and a unit's faction loyalty should be handled differently with a unit's loyalty overriding an individual's loyalty and a unit's loyalty not carrying on with the individual when they leave a unit.

Thank you for that explanation. I agree with what you say, especially independent handling of unit/faction membership. I also think if you break a short contract - like a 7 day one - a cooldown period of 2 or 3 days is simply too long. But more importantly they should absolutely tell you in advance what is going to happen. This is a real disappointment.
