Mechs with Omnipods can't change engine.
Mechs with the Engine tab don't have Omnipods.

TO clarify more, your friend is using a Clan mech, and on those you can't switch the engine type, jumpjets, internal structure type, or armour type. You can switch the omnipods though to get different weapons layouts. You also get Clan weapons which are lighter and longer range generally but with more heat output.
You are using an Inner Sphere mech, which you can switch all that stuff around. Inner sphere weapons are shorter range and heavier generally but output less heat.
To make things more complicated for you , if you use a Clan IIC mech (the 4 mechs that just came out last month) then you will be able to use Clan weapons, but still be able to switch the engine like an Inner Sphere mech
hope that helps

We should start to be careful about the IS/Clan or Battlemech/Omnimech distinction.
It's better to say that your friend is using an Omnimech and you are using a Battlemech. Techline really has nothing to do with it.
Battlemech's can switch equipment (engine, structure/armor type, jump jets, MASC). But they cannot switch hardpoints
Omnimechs can switch hardpoints (via Omnipods). But they cannot switch equipment.
