Greetings,

After having left the forums a couple of months ago, for reasons this post is not about, I decided to come back with those reason in mind.

I decided to try an experiment to cater to my age and lack of coordination to see if I could get to Tier 1 using only one Mech in the Public Queue.

While this Mech is bashed over and over again, there are some interesting statistics and thoughts around the experiment.

The premise; if I run a Mech strictly for the support of the team and not my own glory, will I go up or down in Tier.

I chose an Atlas D-DC with the following configuration:
  • Engine 320 STD
  • AC20 w/3.5 tons of Ammo (24 shots)
  • LRM 15 + Artemis - Mounted on the First Rack
  • Narc - mounted on the Second rack to be in line with the AC 20 - 2 tons of Ammo (24 shorts)
  • LRM 10 + Artemis - mounted on the Third Rack
    • 4 tons of ammo
    • First Volley is 15 LRMS and the second volley is 10 LRMS - then if held down, staggered 10, 5, 5, and 5.
  • ECM
  • 2 MPL
  • Two DBL HS in Engine, Endo Steal
  • Modules
    • ADV. Seismic Sensor
    • Enhanced Narc
    • AC 20 Range 5
    • Cool Shot 9 by 9
    • Improved UAV
  • Armor: 560/614
Play style: The idea here is to be a front-line support Mech with a 32 point alpha with long range support. Sticking with the advancing group; sweet spot range at 200-296 meters - rarely firing without line of sight unless needed. This allows me to narc, and followed by the alpha, causing a psychological retreat mentality, bring the LRM’s to bear; trying not to fixate on that one target as they retreat to engage others closer by, rinse and repeat.

It also allows we to still do damage out to just under 450m for the Narc to still be useful; I also find that the mount of the Narc in combination with the AC 20, the speed of both projectiles to be nearly in sync.

Takes a lot of map knowledge, movement prediction, etc.; I am sure some of you get the idea.

Some statistics:

I started this at 1/5th into Tier 2; I am now 1/6th away from Tier 1:

Not counting my Archived stats, I played over 400 games, with the following net increases for the D-DC:
  • 3.6% increase in wins
  • 5.7% Increase in kills

In just two months.

Of course, these statistics are heavily weighted on a total of (current) 1,589 matches in this Mech (not the above configuration which was the aforementioned approx. 400 games).

Unfortunately, I did not keep track of the wins and losses before and after, nor the Kills and Deaths, as I didn’t think this was as important as the rise in Tier.

Suffice it to say, that given my Tier, and the number of games I played, I find myself bewildered at the increase as this design, which is heavily oriented towards team play, and this was all done in the public queue.

While it sounds like a brag-thread, I assure you, this is not the intent. The intent is to show that if winning is what drives the Tier climb (most losses still achieved an equal or rise condition because of the amount of damage aside from the utter fail moments, of course), that this experiment is testament that higher you climb in Tiers the better the team dynamics are in the public queue and better served when you are playing as a team, for I know, that this kind of increase in Tier cannot be possible if the build is poor.

But more importantly, I came to realize that it is not the individual that makes one good at this game, but the team. The sacrifices, the carrying, the supporting, all the roles, have to play, in order to secure a win. It is not how good your Mech is, or how OP the configuration is, but one’s ability to predict and move with the team, and to act or not act when appropriate.

Anyways, I leave this as food for thought, when you are on the field; that every team member, no matter how well they do, or don’t, play a vital role on the battlefield and on the dynamics of that match, and that often times, it is how we as individuals perceive this that determine the outcome.

Signing off for another couple of months as I rise the rest of the way to Tier 1 (only to be knocked down again, I'm sure :).

Thanks for sharing your interesting experience/experiment. Interesting build.

Keep this in mind though: The way PSR is currently designed it eventually will move people into higher tiers due to the following:
Game Loss:
-can go down in PSR
-can stay the same
-can go slightly up

Game win:
-can stay the same
-can go slightly up
-can go moderately up.

So in theory, if you play a lot of games, all statistics leveling up, you'll go up tiers. You played 400 games. Your skill/teamplay sent you "up", but also probably the "system" sent you up as well.

I believe what Cion said to be fairly reliable. I have found that after streaks of poor performance and losses, I still don't see any drop in Tier from it, despite seeing rises quite frequently from streaks (or sporadic times) of good performance.
