Do you want to play community warfare in the clans or IS?
If clans then Hellbringer Prime, or Stormcrow Prime are two solid ones.

Try all of the trial mechs multiple times, if you like a trial mech remember which one it was and come back here and tell us what you liked the most about each one.
Most new players have more success in heavy and medium chassis. Those types give a good balance of speed firepower and armor. Assaults have alot of armor, firepower, and no speed. Lights have alot of speed, low firepower, and low armor. Both also require some serious upgrades on top of the purchase price too. Heavy and mediums require less upgrades to get functional.
Still try them all, you may be a good light or assault pilot, but most new players aren't because there is no forgiveness to be found in those cockpits. You move to the wrong place in one and you die. Seriously though play 3 or 4 matches in each trial. You will gain nothing but experience and more cbills towards that first purchase.

As for mechs, I'd like a full paragraph, if not a full thesis on your playstyle, weapons preference, speed preference, desire for jumpjets an ECM before I make any suggestions. We've a plethora of mechs available,
To provide accurate information, I will require information with which to make an accurate assessment.

I agree. You do gain chassis xp whilst using it, but it is not unlocked until you buy it. You still gain pilot xp whilst using the trails.
Trail mechs are not as tweaked as the bought ones, and you can not use, as I said, the chassis xp to improve them. So you will only get a feel the the style of your game.
I found not using LRM helps, as it forces you to move and use the mech.

for us to give you a persionalized recomendation rather than just recomend some good general purpose Mechs please provide more information, the sort of information we will find useful is:
what did you like/dislike about each Mech you tried
what did you like/dislike about each weapon you tired
any preference for Clan or Inner Sphere
are you interested in getting in to faction warfare any time soon (and if so any idea what faction you would prefer)
do you prefer speed, agility, durability or firepower and do you want Jumpjets (you cannot have it all but may be able to have several of those options)

Currently:
Heavies are the most optimal. IS is a little more stronger than Clans since the last Quirkening/agility nerf.
So, Quickdraw or Thunderbolt for IS
Timby or Stormcrow(medium but might as well be heavy) for Clan.
This is super general and based on Pug utility.

Good advice here about trying a bit of everything.
I started just under two months ago and went with lights (specifically Jenners) after my Trial 'mech period. There's less room for error, but the mobility is great for running from danger Also, you quickly learn to communicate with/stay near your teammates.
I took a lot of hard knocks at first, but I feel that my situational awareness and grasp of the game are much better because of it. My friend who plays with me started playing in Closed Beta and admits that I'm better than him, and I put most of that on starting with lights.
Plus, toss a BAP in your light and you get pretty good CBills.
Also, I bought 3 variants of the same chassis right away because I wanted to master them. I'd advise you to buy them one at a time and keep trying new things before choosing a chassis to master. After a while that "master-worthy" mech will reveal itself to you (HINT: it'll be the one with 100,000+ unused XP)
But yeah, whatever type feels best for you.
