Hard to skirmish when your team refuses to engage.

that's team issues, no tmech issues though. I have same issue in any of my HBKs, or even CN9s, though at least with my CN9-D I have the wheels to freelance a little more freely.

Also, refusal to engage has still worked to my advantage on many occasions. If both sides are in a lovely stationary peekwar, it's a good time for me to use cover to find flanking angles and firing lanes, and harass. Which if I can do it in my 225 running HBK-4G, I gotta expect a 275 running HBK can do it just as well.

For me and my ability to carry it has more to do with how long matches last. The Opfor pushes in and wipes the team, then all I can do is practice SERE and hope the enemy gets strung out enough to at least not have a total embarrassment match.

But stalemates? IMO, are a Medium Jocks friend.

To make matters worse Euros seem to play... WEIRD.

The only thing worse than pugging on defense in CW is playing anything in Euro prime hours.

I've always preferred the -SP over all other Hunchbacks. Now with the quirk changes I find it makes a better LRM10 mech than the -4J. It has more usable laser hardpoints (4 in arms vs 2 in arms), stronger torso structure, and faster missile velocity which makes up for the slightly less LRM cooldown.

I often switch back and forth between SRMs and LRMs on this mech. I should probably just buy another.

It's a mech I play when I'm tired of grinding and just want to have some no-frills fun. If I sit down for an evening of MWO, the -SP almost always comes out at some point.

and yet...for being overquirked, they are not terribly common, unlike BJs. (Or GridIrons before)

To me that says something.

Most likely because people are still shying away from SRMs, in favor of lasers and ballistics on Mediums. A 50 ton SRM heavy mech is not gonna be on anyone's "game changing" role, even if it is overquirked for its role, which it is.
