Long time lurker, first time poster.

Anyways, the Ember has been my favourite mech from since I got it. I've now got over 400 matches in it. I used to have a great time and my KDR was around the 3 mark. But lately I've been finding it really difficult to get any kills in it and it seems all too keen to die itself. My KDR has now dropped to 2.5, and feels like it'll keep dropping quickly.

I don't normally look at the quirks and that stuff, but I did yesterday and noticed that the only quirk it has is for laser duration. Maybe it used to have more?

Or maybe I'm just driving it really badly at the moment :-D

It used to be good (heh, before clans) so they gave it SFA for quirks. Which is dumb because the only overused, and powerful variant was the A.
Welcome to the wonderful complicated world of PGI balancing.

While you were gone, the Machine gun had been nerfed multiple times. Add to the fact that the Ember received almost no quirks (just one, lol), the poor Hero is now behind the times. Put it back in your garage and forget that it exists, until PGI decides to balance it to viability.

It got nerfed into the ground about 19 months ago...
Ok maybe not quite into the ground but then along came the clans and quirks (which it didn't get much of) and they shoved it to the ground and kicked dirt into its face.

Ah, that's so sad. Used to have a great time running that mech. Oh well....

At least it may not be entirely my piloting skills letting me down though! :-D

Thanks guys

Ember wasn't nerfed specifically, it just never got quirks, MG's did get nerfed hard though,

I want the thing to have nice flamer quirks that make it function as it was intended to do - be a flame boat.

No it's definitely not just you. I rarely play my firestarters anymore because they just don't perform. Like Mister D said, they didn't get nerfed, they just didn't get buffed. The power creep is real.

I've actually had some success with it recently as its really useful in the CW mop up phase if you already have win of the day on FS9-A, but i dont take it out that much otherwise

it never got nerfed that badly (MCGs were nerfed once back in the day but it didn't make that much of a dent in the ember's effectiveness)

post-quirks and post-clan releases, it's just outclassed by other mechs (even other FS9s.) It needs too much facetime to do its damage compared to the -A or the -S

What I always asks myself, if we drop all quirks and somehow the weapons get a global balance pass, will we still see all the thunderbolts and Wolverines or will the old tier1 mechs come back? Shadowhawks and Embers and the like?

MGs need to be useful again, for the Ember to be viable. Otherwise, its energy only brothers are far better. Shadow Hawks were good pre-Clan invasion. Clan invasion really messed things up.

Nearly everything that it used was nerfed.

MGs, succumbed to a trifecta of suck, courtesy of the Nerfinator. Third worst weapon system, nerfed in 3 separate facets.

HoverJets™ nerfed to a much less useful state.

After those, a fair bit of power creep occurred, with the Ember left out.

Once a good example of a P2W robot, now mediocre.

I think quirks are necessary for converting tabletop mechs to a fps. With zero quirks we'd be back to only seeing mechs that can boat whatever weapon is OP with high mounts and good hit-boxes.

If you liked Ember back in the day, you'll probably like the Arctic Cheetah now. It's available as a trial mech right now with a semi-decent loadout, might be worth test driving.

PGI doesn't like MGs, so the Ember and other MG-centric mechs have to suffer for it.
