Reposted here from GD because might as well
Welp, I know I'm gonna get flak for this one but here are a few ideas for balancing the game in a way to make MWO fun again. As much as I love MechWarrior and Battletech recently MWO has been getting on my nerves slowly. The biggest complaint is that Battlemechs were all about tactical strategy meets brutal slugfests of epic proportions. Unfortunately the current iteration of MWO has turned into instadeath alphas that take all the fun, planning, and well the slugfests right out of the game. So here goes, without too much ranting, my list of balances to put in the game.
P.S. Please feel free to offer additional suggestions but the main idea is to murder the concept of boating weapons in cold blood. And of course this should go without saying, I really don't know balance, this is simply put out to kill off the rabid boating going on and bring back the MechWarrior we love.
First step is to remove all quirks plain and simple
Second step is to reformat Clan weapons
-Rule of 10
-Clan ER Lasers have an increase in effective range equal to 10% of Innersphere range
-Clan Pulse Lasers have an increase in effective damage equal to 10% Innersphere damage
-Clan energy weapons generate extra heat equal to 10% of Innersphere heat generation
-Clan energy weapons fire 10% slower than Innersphere energy weapons
-Clan 'mechs should ONLY cost 10% more than their Innersphere equivalent (seriously, the main reason we get the more skilled veterans is that the average Joe Shmoe isn't going to grind out 10+ mil C-Bills just to grab a light mech when they can have an assault for the same price on the Innersphere side)
Third step overall missile rebalance
-LRMs hardcap at 40 tubes
-SRMs hardcap at 16 tubes
Fourth step overall ballistic rebalance
-AC/UAC/LB 2 hardcap at 4
-AC/UAC/LB 5 hardcap at 2
-AC/UAC/LB 10 hardcap at 2
-AC/UAC/LB 20 hardcap at 2 (firing both at once gens ghost heat equal to 60% of normal heat gen)
-Gauss hardcap at 2 (firing both at same time causes power fluctuation - idea would be something small but noticeable like maybe speed gimps, radar shutdown, laser damage decrease for like 5 secs or something. Just to make dual gauss vulnerable for a short time. Sorry but reload nerfs are the cheap way out of balancing a weapon, get hard and get serious.)
-Machine Guns hardcap at 6 (really who freaks out about machine guns unless you are already about dead?)
Fifth step overall energy rebalance
NOTE - due to energy hardpoints, hardcapping would be almost impossible but there are ways to heavily punish energy vomit builds
-Large class weapons (Large, PPCs) firing more than two at a time gens ghost heat equal to 60% normal heat gen
-Small class weapons (Medium and Smalls) firing 6 at one time gens ghost heat equal to 40% normal heat gen, firing 7 or more gens ghost heat equal to 80% normal heat gen
-Flamers can... honestly I can't think of anything, they actually aren't bad as is if you know what to do with them. (seriously guys, these things aren't common more because of the learning curve than anything else. Best balance to them is to get good son)
Well these are my ideas on how we can get this game back down to a reasonable and playable setup again that doesn't scare away new players. Please understand, for the second time, that I really don't know how to balance a game and this is just an opinion post, but even I can see that what is fondly referred to as META in this game is choking the life out of it and something needs to be done quickly. Personally I want to get back to were it took more than 10 seconds to disassemble an enemy and you had to actually fight them. That exciting brawl as you trade shots and have armor flying off your 'mechs as you wonder how much more you can take even as you plan and try to land that shot on just the right part of your target, eyes nervously darting to your heat bar to see if you overestimated your capabilities. Basically that feeling that has just been absent nowadays, replaced simply by a 'luck system' of who shoots first is going to win through instakill alpha loadouts and not on how well they know how to pilot their 'mechs.
Welp... rant over. Good hunting out there MechWarriors.
