Despite the lights being one of the most under played mechs if you read the general forms on any given day I find them to be the best mechs in the game for me. I love zooming around at top speed. Pug land I've won and lost many matches as last mech alive. Here's my top five reasons I play lights and top five mech stats.
1. Speed. I can adapt to the battle field on the fly. Turned a corner into a sea of red? I can survive that unlike other mechs. I choose when and where to attack and for how long. I've ran lights for so long any thing not going 124 is slow. My atlas I have to see my frame rate to see if I'm even moving at 54 kph.
2. Scouting. Real scouts are as rare as a gold kit fox. My target locks and uavs help the smarter pugs deal damage or keeps my team from walking into en enemy death ball.
3. Hunter-Killer. Like the terminator I go after assault's rear torsos and can normally kill them.
4. Stealth Assaults. Some times it's fun to run an ecm mech and follow the slow atlas or kgc. It's even funner when the two of us flank the enemy and now they have two fronts to deal with.
5. Light vs Light Mortal Kombat. Getting into a light fight with another skilled light is chaotic and fun most the time. The three factors that determine who wins it are who has most damage at the start of battle, who manages heat better, and which one of us tries to run away first.
My top five mechs:
1. JENNER JR7-D 432 192 224 0.86 229 267 0.86 66,987 333,830
2. OXIDE 327 151 170 0.89 285 228 1.25 80,370 270,444
3. LOCUST LCT-1E 277 129 144 0.90 196 171 1.15 48,089 226,800
4.HUGINN 246 115 125 0.92 206 173 1.19 58,160 205,216
5.RAVEN RVN-4X 218 93 116 0.80 117 150 0.78 32,208 146,351

Good thing you enjoy them. I never seem to enjoy mechs that I have negative WLR with--with the exception of CUAC20 Adder. Dakka washes the shame away.

lights bring an additional adrenaline rush knowing that with one well places Gauss/AC/Pulse laser shot you're dead.
It's a good variation from the slower heavies and assaults.

I love light mechs. fully 95% of my matches (and I am probably approaching the 15,000 match mark by now) are with light mechs.
I like that in a light mech you write your own destiny for the most part in a match. On the whole, the game becomes more about strategy when you are piloting a light because you have to always consider angles of attack, position, movement and terrain.
It is much more fulfilling game play for me. (reminds me of hardcore mode in Diablo2)
It also means that you are going to be fodder when things go completely out of balance or the new FOTM ubermech hits the field until you learn how to adapt.

I find that this is generally not a good idea because like you said - mortal kombat - he who wins survives with half of his limbs lost.... I do not engage other Lights unless I (we) have the number advantage.

For me it's mostly about two things. First is the fun of having to make split-second decisions all the time. If you zig when you should have zagged, it's game over, man. Game over. You get stuck on a log in Viridan Bog or stuck on a cliff in Canyon Network and it's very possible you'll get instakilled. And yet, you have to maintain high speed and move unpredictably to avoid taking fire as well.
Second is the freedom to move wherever and not worry too much about your team. After playing assaults for a while, you're so used to be being at the mercy of your teams. It's nice to just spread your wings and fly. You can choose to scout, choose to protect your assaults, choose to be on the front line, choose to harass their flanks, choose to do deep hit and run attacks, whatever. The freedom is really nice.

Lights were my jam back in the day, and I still love them, though I've cooled on them since the arrival of the Clans (Streakboats are no fun to play against)
However, I also looove plucking off a leg or side torso with a fat ballistic when they charge me thinking I can't hit them.
