getting tired of halfwit schemes to put an end to 2 hit kill laser alphas. so here is one more:

firing a large group or any alpha strike over a certain damage threshold needs to come with severe penalties. could one or some of these:

more heat
cool down time multiplier
beam duration multiplier
structural damage
spread increase
imprecise convergence
screen shake
random ammo explosions
lock disruption
ecm disruption (if applicable)
broadcasting your location (high heat signature)
mech slowdown (brownout)
mob of angry surats in the cockpit

Some real wrath of Kerensky stuff. Cockpit's boiling, Servos exploding, True Births and Free Births....living together...MASS HYSTERIA!

As much as I'd like to not see continuous alpha strikes, you are basically advocating ghost heat x10. If people can't stand that now, I can't see this gaining traction. Heck, I don't like the idea of an alpha strike effectively crippling my mech. If my mech has the cooling capacity to handle maybe 2 alpha strikes, then I should be able to pull off 2 alpha strikes. That is just my build being heat efficient.

Really, keeping things as they are, maybe riding the 90%+ heat range on your mech for a period of time could cause some blurred vision or something until the heat dropped back down under 90%. That might be about it for me. Rampant ghost heat can stay away.

2 hits?

My Direwolf 1 hits mech with a 94 point alpha at 446m, but to do that i move at 52kph and get left by my team nearly every game.

I dont need any more penalty

Alpha strikes are the symptom, not the cause.

All that´s really needed (IMO) is way less heat capacity and way higher heat dissipation. This would relegate alpha-ing to a measure of desperation, as it is meant to be.

Would ballistics and missiles benefit from that?
Of course they would - and I can´t see a whole lot wrong with that, to be honest.

they already penalize alpha strikes. it was called ghost heat, and it needs to go away.

if you are getting killed in 2 shots, the problem is you, not the game.

I have played this game from day one.

I have seen the SRM meta game the LRM meta game the pop tart meta game and it goes on and on.

If they fix the laser meta today, there will be a new meta tomorrow. And this forum will have post full of moaning again.

Alpha strikes are okay. They belong to battletech and already are penalized. \close

Ghost Heat was what PGI decided on. Normally you would get sensor disruption and your mech slows to walk speed from overheating which alpha-striking is likely to cause.

If you mean normal Group-Fire that is a core mechanic of Battlemech operation and will never be changed due to recycling dynamics of a large number of weapons. Group-Fire is normal and that's all there is to it, so maybe you want the mechs to be tougher to be able to withstand group-fired weapons.

What we really need, are some negative heatscale effects.

And ones that matter, such as speed loss, agility loss, sensor interference, weapon cooldowns being affected.. SOMETHING.

Anything except ammo explosions, because CASE is garbage and also needs to be addressed.

Convergence would fix alot of problems, but since its off the table we have to deal with bandaids.

If only the original TT game (and most of the previous video game incarnations of it) had some kind of gradual heat disadvantage rather than the current "on/off" switch.

You know, something like this:

I would rather see those punished who can not learn that bad builds used poorly is not a reason to blame alpha strike.

Its like watching fat kids who get beat up blaming the winner for not fighting fair.

Winning is about causing as much pain to the loser as quickly as possible, many times by using techniques that make the competitor uncomfortable.

It took me about a year to figure out that it took less time and I took less damage by doing 2-3 alphas and then relocating. My damage and kills almost doubled, and I used the time relocating to look at the map and move to help other players. Very, very , very simple way to be an extremely effective player. I hate wearing a tie, but if my boss say they will double my salary the tie goes on.

what people dont get is that always and everytime there will be someone complaining about losing...and blaming anything else but them.

No matter what change will be done to the game, the good and experienced players will always beat the bad ones. instead of crying here take the beating and learn how the game its played at top levels.

ghost heat was meant as a piss poor way to control boating. you can still do insanely high alphas without ghost heat rearing its ugly head (but fire 30 damage worth of ppcs and suffer!). they could redo it where there is a smaller boating penalty (about a quarter of the current value) and a larger high alpha penalty. that way either boating or high alpha penalizes you thermally.

I want to get this straight - OP are you saying alpha strikes essentially need to be nerfed to benefit laser alphas... Or is it the other way around? Nerf laser alphas?

I thought this was a troll threat honestly... But here we go. If this is meant seriously, it's at least the most honest cry (with regard to the latest outrage caused by high alphas) for a change so far. Sure, make the cockpit go boom! - if you don't use a weapon setup, that I find acceptable.

My Locust only has one weapon, therefore all he can do is alphastrike

Don't nerf alphastrikes.

alpha strikes and laser alphas are in essence the same problem! whenever you cram a lot of damage into a very small slice of time (not every alpha and not every group qualifies of course, just the big ones), there should be a penalty of sorts. ghost heat is designed for very specific circumstances, and can flat out fall on its back end in any other situation.

the weapons used really dont matter, i dont care if you are using a pair of ac10s a 4 rack of your favorite medium lasers and a ppc for a 50+ point alpha, or 5 clan medium pulse lasers and 2 clan er smalls for the same alpha, in the hands of a good mechwarrior the result is the same. above that, when alphas start getting utterly huge and become one hitters, i kind of think that something needs to be done to make that alpha a very rare event. the penalty doesn't need to be heat but there should be a deterrence from using it all the bloody time (hince the list).
