Is PGI working so hard on re-balance that they didnt even have time to check wikipedia or google something?
First they put the Japanese imperial war flag on Yen Lo Wang and now this?
How about a new Kuritan camo that is actually a South Korean flag?

ironically PGI is located in Vancouver which has (likely) the highest Asian population in Canada (at least per capita)
this comedian pretty much sums it up

They are the only iconic Cap mechs in MWO.

Give it a rest. The Wang was painted that way a decade before PGI even made MWO.

The only true Chinese mech will be Men Shen, which means God of the Entrance or Gate Keeper. There are 4 Men Shen in Chinese folklore.

If they really wanted to do a stereo-typical Chinese sale, PGI would have put a stripped-down, quirkless, light clan mech on-sale for 80% off, and mis-spell or mis-name it. Then we'd get a bunch of players who would be flaming the forums, not getting the joke.
My only real issue is that I can't find the lantern for purchase in-game - I guess supplies were limited or they're still in hyperspace transit . . .
Regardless, I wish everyone a Happy and Prosperous New Year! Good fortune and good hunting!

It said Chinese for the first couple hours. I note they didn't add any other flags when they changed it.

Yeah, because PGI did the original art on the Yen Lo Wang from half a generation ago that has the japanese flag, and they totally created all the BattleTech back story.
If PGI is responsible for this cultural stuff, then I want their time machine... Because they must have one if PGI did all this original BattleTech stuff.

The history is irrelevant. The fact that someone once painted a Japanese flag on a YLW Mech doesn't YLW any less of a Chinese God of Death, nor does it make Kintaro Golden Boy any less of a Japanese-themed Mech.
And that's without even pretending that PGI are particularly mindful of BattleTech back stories in the first place.

Look at the Boarshead and Banshee hero, both Mexican themed.

Last time I checked, the Kintaro/Goldenboy refers to something from Japanese folklore.
And the Japanese don't exactly celebrate Lunar New Year.
Could've just sold a YLW in 100% bright red paint and called it a day.
