Hi all,

My wife and I are moving and need a new internet plan. My current plan is free Google Fiber which, while free, causes great lag and headaches on wireless unless I am in the same room as the modem/router (probably due to our current apartment's design and the location of the router). Works fine when wired in, though.

We are looking at different plans and I wanted to ask all of you - what download/upload speeds work for you for low lag online play?

Thanks!

*edit* I made an error - there is no such thing as lagless play. I edited the second paragraph accordingly.

*edit 2* I did not include enough information initially - we are moving to a city that does not have Google Fiber, hence the need to find a new isp. We are purchasing a much better modem and router for our new condo. Basically I'm wondering if others have had success with a cheaper plan (25 mbps download, 5 mbps upload) or need a more expensive plan (75 mbps download, 5 mbps upload)

*edit 3* Added what type of internet connection we are using.

No such thing unless you basically live in the same city as the servers.

On Oceanic I've seen pings of 5 as those players are in Singapore(?) where the servers are.

Realistically aim for a ping of <100 but in order to give you advice on how to get that we need to know where you live.

Causes problems if your not in the same room as the router? This isn't a Google fiber issue, then, its an issue with your router and/or wifi configuration.

Changing isp's won't change that, unless you're using an ISP provided router.

Just configuring your router correctly or getting a better one will fix the issue as well, and be substantially cheaper.

Same room as the router?

Are you really running wireless. IF so, you are going to be hard pressed to find anything else.

Wireless are basically radio frequencies that are easy to clog with other devices and "stuff".

If you are one room away on wired, you will need to let us know more about what is offered and where and what type of machine you have. Old cpus can cause bottlenecks that can cause in game lag, but not a bad ping time.

25/5 is more than fine. You'd get great MWO performance even at a much slower connection - connection bandwidth has no real impact on ping time, at least so long as you're not saturating it (such as downloading in the background while playing). And even if you are saturating it, with a good QoS router, it still won't impact your MWO experience.

So no, you don't need a faster connection.

This. Games do not take much bandwidth unless you are hosting. And this game doesn't have client hosting.

upload speed is all that makes a difference these days (same as what others said for download)

Double check your neighborhood to see if their speeds match advertised. Also do a google search for that provider in your area, and also try the same search with gaming attached. See if they have a return policy for a period of time, what they say is not always what you get.

Get the **** off of WiFi.

OP I have 10 down 2 up cable and MWO still lags like shhittt its horrible net code and terrible optimization on graphics also I run a 8 core AMD 3.6 and 16gigs of memory with a NVidia 980 card and the game runs and plays like crapp on anything but medium settings.

WiFi, check.
Wireless keyboard, check.
Wireless mouse, check.

All systems nominal.

Mine runs pretty well, actually. As long as I don't use MSAA, its great all the time, and I've just got an old 7870.

But you should qualify, lag or fps loss? They are totally unrelated.

Wireless if fine, if you have good hardware and/or have correctly configured hardware.

There are great cellphone apps for finding uncongested wifi channels and such, which can really ease said setup.

The best option you have if you absolutely need to use wireless is to get a high end router and wifi adaptor with dual band and try to run it at 5Ghz. The reason for the lag is very likely packetloss due to interfering devices or faulty hardware. It however maybe unsolvable. It is always recomended to use an ethernet cable anyway though, especially if you can't be arsed with setting up tests and monitoring the traffic to see how much of an issue there is.

I highly recommend you get off of WiFi.

I was on WiFi myself for a long time, not realizing there was a solution to my dilemma of where my modem/router was vs. where my PC was (up 2 flights of stairs).

A friend mentioned powerline adapters, and I bought something like this and its been completely amazing.

I can't recommend it enough if you have a relatively stationary setup.

Installation will take you about 5 minutes of zero effort.

For you and you're wife you'll need a third adapter for the 2nd PC but you only need one adapter for the router.

I'm getting 100~115mbs download speeds.

Well, download speeds are capped by your internet connection more than anything else. A properly configured wireless n or better.connection will get you transfer speeds (between PC and router) way faster than any regularly available Internet access.

If it's set up correctly.

Power line adapters can be good, if you have a standalone house with good wiring. However, heavy loads on nearby circuits with motors and such (such as a washing machine or dryer) can interfere: it all depends on the quality of your home's wiring.

They're generally not good for apartments and whatnot, for noise and secuirty risks.

With that said, I've got 4 sitting in a drawer I'd sell cheaply if anyone is interested - I used them for 6 months or so while I was wiring my home for Ethernet, don't need them anymore.
