I really don't know why people keep pressing on this subject. The basic response you're going to get from PGI is that it isn't allowed, because it straight up isn't. The reality is that these particular mods are quite harmless and I doubt PGI will go out of its way to ban people for them. But trying to make a big thing out of them may very well start pushing it over the edge and the official forums probably aren't the place to declare you're using them.

In regards to actually modding them yourself, I can tell you that it's a god awful process from what I've seen/heard and it isn't as simple as replacing a file at all.

I hear there's a MW2 sound pack floating around.

It would be nice if there were a MW2:Mercs version.

Those are some strong fighting words, friend. I won't let you insult the MW3 sound design as long as I'm around.

I check that site every now and then and there's no sign of a MW2:Mercs version yet.

As for the MW2 mod that I very often hear....well you can extrapolate that statement however you like.

Not sure what point you are making linking that. If you are trying to show that sound mods are o.k., all that post says is that Russ didn't ban a specific person when asked. It does not provide a blessing from PGI. In fact, I have never heard they were alright, in which case they are against the Code of Conduct if any of the following apply:

HACKING / CHEATING / EXPLOITING

The following actions are strictly forbidden:

• Modifying any game client files aside from those expressly listed below:

- User.cfg
- Game.cfg
- Attributes.xml
- Actionmaps.xml
- Profile.xml
- Weapongroups.xml
- Changing default save/profile/install locations

‘Injecting’ third-party files that may not directly modify game files.

Also,

Displaying or discussing the results of altering or tampering with game client files.
Displaying or discussing the results of injecting third-party files.

The discusson came about because of a change to the TOS, so it was brought to Russ to ask if he had banned the use of the sound mods.

That post flat out says that no, he didn't.

And thus the problem PGI have.

Their edit to the CoC clearly makes sound mods a no no

That quite aptly covers exactly what the sounds mods are.

Then Russ goes and muddy the waters by saying no we didn't ban them.
They need to stop changing CoC and then adding undocumented exclusions because nobody knows where they stand, and if you do get banned i will bet every penny they will point you to the above and say we told you here.

Oh thank god I'm not the only one who thought that there was some pretty extreme rose-tinting going on. Bitchin' Betty aside, of course. Like, seriously? Are you *really* okay with ballistics that sound like they'd be more at home in a Dragon Ball episode? And what the hell is up with the missiles?

Dear PGI:

Want to make ooga-booga money?

MAKE THESE SOUNDS AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE.

Seriously, some interface work, and the sound files. Then, sell more sound files then you have ever sold camo since beta, profit.

EDIT:

In case I can;t, SOME ONE PLEASE attend town hall tomorrow and ask Russ directly about possibly making this a priority and not just an "eh maybe some time" thing.

it doesn;t have to be sound packs! They could microtransaction the **** out of this and sell them weapon by weapon, and make mulitple files per, and infinite expansion of available sounds as they develope them in the future. Start with one sound mod per weapon, add more as you go, make **** tons of money.

Showing Russ how to make $$ of of the sounds is likely the only way to get him to work on them. it also benefits players that only really want a particular sound replaced, by making it cheap and a la carte. Also, want a MW2 betty, MW3 missiles and a MW4 PPC? doable with itemized sounds. Not so much with giant all encompassing sound pack modules.
