I have played 2 games tonight solo, I had a wait time of about 3 or 4 minutes each. I joined a queue with a friend of mine we spent over 10 minutes in the queue.
This is a running theme with this game. I can be in groups of up to 6 people, and our wait times are terrible. Solo they aren't so bad. But that's not how we want to play the game.
We get on and go 'Hey you want to play mechs?' and the answer is usually 'No I'm sick of searching simulator let's play <something else>'.
Fix it. It's not good.

Just a question... what timezone and local times are you playing... and which servers do you have selected?
Maybe you are just playing at an off-peak time for your timezone and should maybe try selecting US/EUR and AUS servers to give the matchmaker more options at where to place you and your friend.
Please note however, that the Group queue is also usually noticeably harder skillwise, as the players are usually more coordinated compared to the solo queue.
From easy to hard Id rate the game modes as follows
Solo play (variying difficulty depending on your Tier rating)
Group play
CW in an organised group
CW solo
...long time nothing
Organised private matches for various player organised tournaments and leagues
