Not to change the topic of my own thread, but, I just had the idea of doing the same thing with my Shadowcat. Previously I ran it as a laser boat with 2 Large Pulse Lasers and 1 ER Medium Laser. It was mediocre at best. I was barely able to keep its KDR in the positives range. Well I just switched around some Omnipods and turned my Shadowcat into a little death machine by giving it 3 SRM6 and and 2 ER Medium Lasers. First match in it, 500 damage, 4 kills, two of them solo kills. That's better than it ever performed with lasers.

I bought a Kintaro 18(C) for cash after I got a SHD with my cadet bonus. The 300xl was worth every penny. The Kintaro was recycled.

I've always enjoyed the KTO either as a SRM or LRM boat. Esp finishing people off with my one ML. :)

Hi.
I'm an Orion pilot, looking for a fun medium mech to play in. I bought an Enforcer, but it wasn't very good, even with a big new engine and everything. I like how the Kintaro looks, and as an Orion main, I'm no stranger to ****** hitboxes. The KTO-18 looks like it can be fast with high burst damage. I am used to being in an oversized mech that no-one seems to play, so could I get some recommendations? (pls no XL builds. I like my STs and KTOs look too big for 'em)

So... uh... you know.... the Jenner JR7-F (C) also comes with an XL300 and is much cheaper...

Really? Enforcer is pretty good. And if you run it as a striker you roll damage almost without trying... Still, I understand just plain not clicking with a mech, me and Hunchbacks are just not friends.

As for the Kintaro, it's hard to put together a standard engine build and have enough tonnage to take advantage of your missile hardpoints. You either wind up with smaller launchers that limit your burst damage, or a serious lack of ammo. Of the two, I'd go with the smaller launchers and stick with the pack if you can. http://mwo.smurfy-ne...856a9324b0ebf3f

yeah, with an STD that seems about as maxed as the 18 can feasibly get. Personally the only Medium I run XL free is my Hunchback. And the limitations in your build demonstrate why..... just too many mechs that can out do that thing. I know you don't click with HBKs, but a 4SP will eat that KTO-18 for breakfast.

Definitely agree with you on the Enforcer, and I have heard that some SHDs are making a bit of a resurgence in the upper tiers. SHDs are very good with XLs, and still decent with STDs.

In fact I would look at the SHD-2D2 or 2K but he doesn't want XLs... despite the SHD running XLs rather well.

A pity since the 2d2 can easily do 102 kph, jump and pack a 55 pt alpha, with max armor and 6 tons of srms.

I used to do really well in my Kintaros, but when I moved up into tier 3 they became scrap metal on legs.

i used one as a 3lpl boat and it worked out well. and the lrm spam build works well sometimes, well enough that it mastered in a couple days. but lerming is boring. i had another that was an srm boat and yep it does that jerb ok still.

i think its all around an ok build, but there are better mechs that cover all the roles its good for.

Griffen with XL300, Quad SRM6 and ECM.... Might be better than a Kintaro.

This is why I generaly use LRMs on Kintaros and SRMs on Griffins.

I strongly advocate the medium weight class LRM support chassis. And here are my reasons.

Firstly you will not be using up an Assault or heavy chassis for a support role. This means you will not be depriving your team of a line fighter or significant amounts of armor on the line.

Next up we have the simple matter of mobility. A medium mech can easily keep pace with the rest of the team and has the capacity to repossition rapidly to evade being taken down by a sudden shift in the battle lines and being over run (like what can easily happen to slower assault chassis LRM boat).

Another advantage also mobility related is the ability to use your own speed and smaller size to possition to aquire your own target locks.

And lastly the medium mech LRM support chassis can work wonders for exstending the life of your team's assaults and heavys. The technique I use is to follow closely behind the assault brawlers on your team (don't crowd just be close enough to see what they will see and engage what engages them) You will literally be using the moving brawlers for cover but you are not a parasite.

You are using a fairly constant stream of LRM5s to barrage the enemy looking to target your assault mechs. You will be blinding them with the impacts suppressing their movements and lending damage to the attack the whole time you are NOT taking up frontage on the attack line. Sometimes there is only room for a few mechs to have clear lanes of fire. And frequently a medium mech should NOT be blocking the fire lane better served by having a more potent weapon platform on the line.

LRM support mechs can still contribute in this situation where a conventional direct fire mech will not be able to effectivley fire through (over) it's team mates.

If you want an LRM 5 support mech, and it needs to be light tonnage, the Kintaro is a good choice.

If you want to do anything else, pick something better.

Wolverine > Griffin, imo. I'll trip SRM6s w/ trip Medium Pulse Laser backups every day.

As a slight aside, I still find SRMs to be very duplicitous. An Oxide firing 4x SRM-4s into an Atlas or Awesome at 270m, the bulk of those missiles are going to land in the CT. An Atlas firing 4x SRM-4s at an Oxide, the pilot might hit with 50%? Possibly, on a good day, 75%? This is the same situation that we have when it comes to LRMs and the LB-X weapons - the spread is set but it is set at a "medium" level for all mechs across the board. So, one weapon is better against a certain size and then immediately awful against anything on the other extreme end of the spectrum. It is definitely asking too much for PGI to code it this way, given that they can't, after 4 years, code the game to be stable so players don't drop every freaking match, but spread weapons should have two spreads, one Small and one Large, that changes dependent upon the target.

Now consider: The tallest Mech up until 3055 is 14.4 meters tall.

MWO's Centurion is 14.7 meters.
Food for thought.

And the MWO atlas is just under 17 meters if I recall correctly, because they oversized pretty much everything.... Except the Spider, Stalker and Zeus, for some dumb reason

That reason was -- somebody above Alex told him how to do his scale after he drew.

If you go by the scale of the small details in this image -- you can see the Catapult was gonna be MUCH smaller, and someone supervising him said "Nope, we're gonna make them BIG."
