I just found out when you press 'R' your target gets highlighted then you get all kinds of info like it's distance, chassis variant, damaged parts and much more.
Plus it helps your teammates locate and target him.
How come so few people know about this?

I am guessing you did not pay attention while doing the tutorial .... or maybe you skipped that?

He made an account just to do this? Or perhaps he's just a seal clubber blowing off some steam?

Only played a couple of weeks back then and cameback a month ago.

Anyway, I really wonder why so many players don't systematically lock their target.

Maybe because you're in the heat of the battle and you're focused on aiming and shelling your opponent/saving your life.

Then pressing "R" is the best way to increase your chances: 1/ you'll see where the enemy is weaken (that's why the "target info gathering" module is soooo good) and 2/ you'll rise the attention of your teammates and even maybe get their support.
Pressing "R" must be a reflex, no excuses, this is the most important basic skill in this game.

Not pressing R is a noob hallmark, every serious player has it hardwired. I don't mind, don't press it, your funeral.

All of this. I have to rebind my reload key in every FPS because I hit R as soon as I see an enemy now Posted Image

Unfortunately, there´s also the flipside, people that think spamming r for minutes on end makes any sort of sense.

Spamming around a for a few seconds to alert to a large group is one thing, buzt if you keep pushing "r" once /second, 2 things will happen.

1. anyone that actually could support you from range is going to say "**** it" and do something else that might be useful, becasue his information is changing every second, before he can even get targeting , much less id the target This holds especially true of indirect fire support, if you keep spamming r before anyone can even get a lock, they nobody is going to be throwing LRMs your way. Same holds true for spamming every 5 seconds or so.... get lock, fire, lose lock but see new target pop up, repeat 2-3 times, stop firing LRMs in that direction.

2. you will die, alone, as a direct result of 1.

They do but the enemy have ways to counter it so not really worth it.

I don't exactly know what you mean by spamming.
But I never hold locks, except when I have spotted a cored mech and I'm hunting it, or if I'm duelling. On the opposite, I'm constantly circling targets to see which mech is weak and in what part. As they said, information is ammunition, I need that information.
As for my teammates, if they see see one steady lock, they even might think there is only one mech, that I can handle myself, that they won't lose their advantageous position to chase one single mech (and they would be right). On the other hand, if they see multiple targets in one location, they might think it's a good trade. As for indirect support, no lurm support will worth knowing that this particular mech can be killed in one precise blow.
Also, I will probably hide behind cover and break line of sight, especially if I'm against multiple opponents holding locks won't be my priority, evading incoming fire will. So don't expect steady locks. I might pop an UAV though. But good lurmers spot their own targets, that's another noob hallmark.

also depends on what mech i am currently in and the situation i have got myself into.

in a fast light if you get in a mix with 2 or 3 enemies you spend most of the time twisting, jumping, making yourself hard to hit while also trying to get volleys off that hitting "R" sometimes takes a back seat.
in a long range mech, odds are most of the time you can't actually lock a target.
there are a couple others, but as a general rule for me i try to lock targets whenever possible. Especially when i play escort duty and something tries crawling up behind the big assaults. Its a good way to let the bigger mechs know something is going to shoot them in the back.

I've gotten so twitchy I press it instinctively when people walk by my office.

i've seen some players cycle through targets intentionally to alert the rest of the team to the number of enemy mechs in an area.

hear a lot of bleeps and see a lot of flickering red triangles.

This also earns said player a lot of $ from spotting bonuses.

If that's the case, you should do the tutorial. There's 5 million cbills in it for you.

Why people don't press R is one of the biggest mysteries in the game, and has been since the it first started.
