Newbie question about heat sinks. The first Mech I bought was a Centurion (regrettable). I've noticed I can't buy heat sinks to put in slots on my Mech. The only place I can put them is in the engine, and they're single heat sinks. And I am confused, cause I"ve seen other Mechs placing heat sinks in torsos, arms, etc. Can someone help this newbie?

Heatsinks can be placed anywhere. However, a single heatsink requires 1 ton and 1 critical slot. Since you are able to place it in the engine, it sounds like you do have some free tonnage but no free critical slot.

Are you clicking on them or dragging them to the desired slot? Have you filled up the slots with endo steel and ferro armor and have no free ones?

You'll probably want to upgrade to double heatsinks when you can.

Centurions are some of my favorite mechs, but they do take a little "getting used to". My preference is the AL model, which is more laser focused than AC, I run it with 2 SRM6s, 2 LL (in the arm) and 2 ML in the torso. 245XL (some will tell you, correctly, that an XL makes the Cent fragile, but I find it a reasonable trade off, others do not).

As to the heat sinks... An engine can hold, internally, as may heat sinks as it's rating divided by 25. So a 250 engine can hold 10 internal sinks (250/25=10). The 245 that I run in my Cent can only hold 9 (245/25=9.8, round down to 9). All mechs are REQUIRED to have a MINIMUM of 10 heat sinks, so if you run a 245 or lower engine then you MUST place at least 1 additional sink somewhere in the mech. As a general rule, always use Double Heat Sinks. yes, it is 1.5 million c-bills up front to refit a mech to carry DHS, but it is worth it. (There are a few situations in which Single heat Sinks are acceptable, but those are usually lights with a lot of MGs, or assaults with special builds, neither make a difference for this discussion).

A Single HeatSink (Inner Sphere version) takes 1 ton and 1 slot, the IS DHS takes 3 slots and 1 ton. The only reason that I can think of as to why you were unable to add SHS to your mech was that it was either out of space or out of weight.

One further note: Endosteel will save you more weight, in every situation, than Ferro Fibrous Armor. Never, EVERtake Ferro armor unless you already have EndoSteel, still need the weight savings, and have a ton of space left over. Most mechs that run both are light mechs with medium/small lasers, they have the space for I

Maybe I just don't know how to set up my Mechs properly yet. The problem isn't that I can't equip them, it's that I don't see them in the shop. I only see the STD Heat Sinks. Is that normal?

(Face Palm) Nevermind, my friend just pointed out my very obvious mistake.

just for future referance in case someone else clicks on this thread looking for help

in game go to the Mechlab,
select the Mech you want,
go to loadout
I recommend upgrading to Double Heat Sinks if you have not already and have 1.5 million cbills available,
bottom left corner there should be sliders for:
Single/double heatsinks,
Endo/standard structure,
Fero/standard armor
Artemus/standard missile guidance.

to add more Heat Sinks in the top right corner go to equipment, miscellaneous, there you will see heat sinks, just drag and drop into the required location

if you look at the above screenshot you will see I have 5 slots free but no free tonnage so I cannot place a Double Heat Sink because it requires 3 slots and 1 ton
