Another fun (not so fun lol) idea for punishing those who like to overheat and shutdown.
Why not add a mini-game to the startup sequence when that gets more difficult the higher one is over the shutdown threshold? Nothing to complicated, think Gears of War reload quirk (press a button at a certain point as the bar fills) but with 3~5 different bars/gauges that need to be completed in a row to refire the reactor where the size of the "success" part of the bar increases as heat goes down making it easier to time the button press.
This forces those that overheat to focus their attention away from the battlefield losing situational awareness to get their mech back into the battle.

There's nothing wrong with this idea.
A power down button sequence that when done correctly under pressure to turn on faster would be pretty great.
Make it so if you don't do it you power up the same speed as now, but with the ability to power up faster (and perhaps even immediately vent 10%) of your heat.
The mini game would have to be short, simple but with the potential for you to fail in a high pressure situation.
Not every idea is a bad idea people.

How about back in MW3 where if you kept overheating you would eventually destroy your HUD?
