I think it would be good to have an option for an unrated quick play along side the rated one. Pilots could enter these matches knowing that they could end up playing anybody but still not affect their tier rating. The reasons for this are many such as learning a new mech or loadout. Another would be of course simply learning the game without being labeled a failure from the start. New players would feel they had a choice to be rated or not and with that choice would more likely keep playing and learn from their mistakes rather than just giving up. Community Warfare is not that option. People having a frustrating learning experience with rated quick play will be even less happy playing community warfare matches especially with that stupid splash screen at the end of a failed CW match basically telling you that you suck.... really PGI? Sure, you will basically be playing anybody with any possible skill in an unrated quick play but people will be more willing to learn and experiment instead of just quitting if the game would just stop trying to label them at every failed attempt or basically just tell them they suck. Rated play is good but not having a choice can really suck the fun out of playing especially if you are a new player.

I see the merit in this suggestion. I suppose the potential pitfall is you could have guys going unrated for a long time getting experience and skill, eventually deciding to run their tier and cleaning house.

I do see it as a good option though. At this point, I'm not sure how important tier really is, as you're not going to have a T1 v T5 match up anyways. So, dropping rated or not, the guys in your tier SHOULD be close to your skill level.

The real benefit I see, is when you want to test our mechs. Trying to shake something up in a zero stakes casual drop could be fun. You'd just have to watch out for goofballs not taking it seriously, but then again, maybe that doesn't matter in an unranked game.

I'm for it.

I also want to mention that it will change up the usual challenge of playing in your current tier rated games. For example, if you are always playing in tier 5 you will certainly learn new and better skills playing with and against better players that may decide to play an unrated game or two. Hard to get better when the norm is always newbie. It really comes down to feeling you have a choice.

The unrated idea could also work for those who don't care about the tier system, but maybe give it an additional name 'Casual player'

where you play all the same modes but no ranking while everything else stays the same.

good thing about the old ranking system was that you could get into match with anybody, many times a frustrating experience, but you got some inspiration

i support the unrated quickplay option idea

maybe even replace the playernames with mech variant names and only show the player names after the match ended?
would be cool

@M
I think I like the idea of hiding names during unrated/causal play, however I think it shouldn't be shown at all before or after battle.

If unrated means that the matchmakers is only trying to match mech classes and tonnage, we pretty much had this back in the early days of Open Beta. My prediction is that it will quickly end up being very sparsely populated.

The main drawback of this suggestion is that you are creating another bucket in addition to Solo Public Queue, Group Public Queue and if CW3 is implemented as announced, Faction Play Unit Queue and Faction Play Solo Queue.
