I was away for a year and I assumed nothing had changed in this regard but are there through armour crits now?
If not then could someone tell me what mech is using a weapon config that removes 40 armour and turns the internals red in 1 hit?
I know one of the weapons is a Gauss as I hear the "dunk" sound when it hits, but even 2 Gauss is only 30 damage.
I've seen the mech that does this shoot me from a distance of around 500-1000m (although I never remember to look at what kind of mech it is) and know it's ballistics as I never see lasers.
My MDD keeps getting hit by this...whatever it is and losing a st to the second hit by anything.
I don't like to assume it's a cheat but can't figure out what it is, and it's happening quite often now.
My JM6-S feels massively tanky compared to my MDD and there isn't much armour difference on the st's.

No, there are no TACs in MWO.
There is, however, a weird damage carryover effect. Basically, if you hit an enemy with a gun, and that shot is able to fully destroy the body section's armor (touch the internals), then what happens is that you still get a crit roll even though much of your damage was spent trying to break the armor. Since crits deal some damage to internal structure, this means that the damage/crit carryover effect can result in more damage dealt than the "on paper" values would suggest.
For example, a fully armored head has 33 health. Twin Gauss (30 damage) can instakill a mech's 33 health head if the crit gods are smiling or frowning upon certain parties.
For the Vulture in particular, your issue is the side torso hitboxes.

Well, AC40s are a possibility on at least 3 chassis that I can think of. Particularly IS AC40s, which doesn't give you much warning if the guy carrying it does it right.
Shrug. I got hammered to death early in a game by a Archer LRM swarm and I think a sniping Shadow Cat last night. Excellent grouping tore off my XL side torso, didn't even have time to register. Some times focus fire hits without you being aware of it.
